For the moms who had a c-section due to a large baby

How big was the baby when they decided on a c-section. How far along were you?

TIA

Re: For the moms who had a c-section due to a large baby

I had a c/s due to a breech baby but I was told the baby would be 8.5lbs and she was 7lbs 15oz.

There are very little times a mom really medically needs a c/s for a "large" baby.
Personally I would not get cut for an estimate of weight. My mom had my brother at over 9lbs naturally and many of the moms on this site have had bigger babies without c/s.

My son was 9lbs 6.5 ouces and 22 inches long. I did not have a C section though. I am average size I would say 5"7 135 lbs before baby.

I was enduced 1 week prior to my due date since the baby was measuring 9lbs 3 ounces. My dr's said lets give natural a try first and then c section as a last resort. I was able to have him naturally, so maybe this is an option for you?

The only reason I had a c/s was because he was breech. He measured big all along, but I wanted to v-birth if I could, but since he never turned, I wasn't able to. He was nearly 3 weeks early and 9 lbs. 7 oz. and 22" long.

Re: For the moms who had a c-section due to a large baby

My sister in law had her 10 pound 9 oz naturally. I was all for natural, when approached for c-section, I hestitated..but I went to a doctor for a reason throughout my pregnancy..to go home in one piece with a healthy baby. That's the way he introduced himself to me. He said that was his job.

So, when he said, big baby, no drop, no contractions, c-section recommendation, I went with it. He said maybe baby will make it through, maybe he won't and we do emergency c-section...but why cause the baby unnecessary stress?

Re: For the moms who had a c-section due to a large baby

He was only 7lbs 5oz. But he was too big for my frame.
And beleive me I tried and tried to have him naturally- but after 3.5 hours of pushing, they knew he was too big and he wouldn't come out without getting stuck.

Re: For the moms who had a c-section due to a large baby

I had a 9lb 10 oz baby on a thursday and they made the decision to do a c-section on the previous monday after a sono showed that she was weighing in at around 10 lbs.

I do have to say that I was glad that I had a c-section. There was another mom whose baby was in the NICU while Emily was there also (she had high bilirubin levels and some lung issues when she was born) and her son was in the NICU because he got stuck coming out during a vag birth. It was her 3rd child and her other two were bigger then him, but he was 10lbs 3 oz and for whatever reason her body just couldn't handle his size, even though she had done it before.

Not to freak you out but the baby had a lot of issues from getting stuck. It just gave me more reason to be glad I went with the c-section.

I do think that with every situation the doctor will advise you as to the best route. If he thinks your body can handle it and recommends you try vag, I think it's worth the try. If he says no way, you need a c-section, I'd trust the doctor's instincts. They do this every day, and we only do it once or maybe a few times in our lifetime!

I agree, I have absolute faith in my doctors. if they say c-section is the way to go, that is what I am going to do. Thanks for the info Chat Icon

Re: For the moms who had a c-section due to a large baby

I was a week late with no progress (41 weeks). They did a sono and predicted him to be 9lbs 11oz. Based upon me being a smaller person, they suggested a c-section which I was completely happy with. I was DONE being preggo. He was born the next morning at 9lbs 4oz.

Re: For the moms who had a c-section due to a large baby

My sonos showed that she was measuring big but my doctor kept on telling me not to worry - that he has had smaller women than me deliver big babies. I am 5 5 and 125lbs.
When I went past my due date I BEGGED for him to plan something b/c I couldnt wait any longer. 5 days after my due date they tried to induce me and I wasnt dilating. He then gave me the option of continuing to try to be indcued or the c-section. I chose the C and they delivered her at 9lbs 10ozs - with a big head too - and they then said that I would not have been able to deliver her any other way.
