Re: flying? & cruises

i think if you feed during take off, it could help with the pressure. i wanted to go on a curise but we have to pay for my DC, who also would be 10 months so we nixed that idea.

Re: flying? & cruises

Totally safe with the air pressure (provided your DC doesn't have a cold). Popular misconception though- it's not take off that causes ear problems, it's landing.

During take-off and ascent, the air thins out, so there is no build up of pressure. During descent/landing however, the air pressure begins to build up again and THAT'S what causes the pain (the air inside the ear and eustacion tube also expand).

Ask your flight attendant to let you know when you are about to begin the initial stages of descent and give your little one a bottle or paci then.

We're going on a cruise this July. DS will be 13 months and we don't have to pay for him. Just the taxes but it's not a full fare that we are paying.

We are going on the Norwegian Dawn.

Connor has been on 3 flights 7 months old, 1 year old and 18 months. He slept both ways on all 3 flights.

No issues with the pressure.

I don't know how many but I have seen them on cruises. A lot of these ships are family based style. I have seen babies on cruise ships but the camps and stuff are for the older kids. That's the downside. There is nothing for infants to do. You will be with them 24/7. I don't mind because DH and I have been on 3 cruises before having a baby so we don't mind.

Our son will be 13 months when we go. He can't even go into the kiddie pools. But I think he can with a swimmie diaper. I called them and asked but then again once you are onboard the ship they will tell you something else.

As for the price. I believe we are paying like $292.00 for him. Somewhere around there. Every cruise line is different though...

Re: flying? & cruises

We took my son on his first cruise when he was ten months. We had the best time. The flight was a breeze at this age for us, we took some toys and made sure baby had a bottle for take off and landing (to prevent ears from popping.) Flying was much easier before our son could walk now we need that dvd player or else.

Although many cruises have babysitting, we did not feel comfortable using it at this age so nights were relatively early. But we did find a no smoking sing-a-long bar where baby could sleep or listen to music while we relaxed.

Days were great. DS loved the pool, wading pool and just exploring the ship. On the Carnival the play room opened to little ones for an hour or two around lunch time. Because we kept our son up later he took a long nap in his stroller in the afternoon giving my dh and I time to relax and spend some alone time together. He went right back on schedule when we returned home---which I suppose is a miracle.

We took one small bucket and shovel and one of those little fold up rafts for beach trips, but a cup would do at that age. We took lots of sunscreen and a uv protectant hat. Most of the time in the pool we made the baby wear a long sleeve t-shirt. We always had an extra dry bathing suit and shirt available to change him into right after swimming. We had many extra clothes with us.

I should mention that cruises do not let babies who are not potty trained in the pool but many do not inforce this policy. Make sure your ship has a wading pool for the little ones just in case they throw you out of the big pools.

I was breast feeding and switching to milk when I took my son. BUt my friend who travels alot and used solely formula told me about the powdered individual packet which are great for the beach cause they need no refridgeration, just add to a bottle of water.

YOu will have to do lots of planning to be prepared, but I think it is all worth it. I must admit that I have several friends who completely disagree with me about traveling with a baby/toddler, but I love it.

By age 2, Jack had traveled by plane 5 times and we never had an issue. The first time was 5 months old.

Re: flying? & cruises

The only cruise line that doesn't charge for infants in Norwegian. All they charge is for taxes and port fees.

You're right. All of the other cruise lines charge you the 3rd/4th passenger rate. We brought Brendan on RCL with us when he was 6 months old. We left out of Bayonne, NJ so we wouldn't have to fly with him. It was sooo easy. We just drove right up to the ship and walked on. There's not much for younger babies to do, but he came everywhere with us. You can pretty much bring your stroller everywhere. None of the cruises will let kids that are not potty trained into the pools for sanitary reasons, even if they have swim diapers on. Most cruise lines offer in cabin babysitting, but I think the minimum age is 1 year. Brendan was sooo good the whole time, but I have to say that even though we had a great time, it was not exactly relaxing! Chat Icon Vacationing just isn't the same when you bring a baby along.
