First birthday parties

If you had a large first birthday party for your child, what is the reason? I mean, did you want a huge celebration - did you do it just because it's common to throw large parties for first b-days, etc. I'm trying to convince my DH to let me throw a large party for my twins when they turn 1 in a couple of months and am losing the battle.
For me we had a long journey getting pregnant and the fact that we were blessed with two beautiful babies makes me want to throw a gala event, although I'll settle at a neighborhood restaurant...lol. Plus all the changes a baby goes through in their first year should be celebrated. He doesn't feel the same way I do, unfortunately (about the party, not the twins).

Re: First birthday parties

we did a big party for our 1st. he was sick at birth, and there was a chance he wouldn't make it, or he could have ended up with severe handicaps, such as cerebal palsy ,brain damage etc...

by the time we got to his 1st birthday we wanted to celebrate it big time. we have lots of family members, and a good number of friends so when all waa said and done we had about 85 people.

for my second, we felt if we did for the 1st ,we should also do for the second. so she had a big party as well.

it wasn't so much for the baby per se, but more for the adults to get together and celebrate something good.

Re: First birthday parties

We did a huge party for a few reasons

1. DS-- even though he wont remember it, it was fun to spoil him

2. for us--we cant entertain too often since we have a small apt, so this was a good way to get all our friends/family together

3. we had a small christening

We had a huge party for

1) We wanted to celebrate her first year in a big way.

2) DH and I were TTC for awhile so having Ella is huge blessing and she is the LOVE of our lives and we are so blessed to have her. Also, our firends and families wanted to celebrate with us in a big way.
