EZPASS surcharge

Senator Nick Spano announced today that the New York State Senate passed legislation, that would prohibit agencies that administer E-ZPass in New York State from charging monthly surcharges.
The bill (S.6331) is a response to complaints from downstate motorists about an unwarranted $1 administrative service charge being tacked on to their E-ZPass account bills each month.
Three different agencies authorize E-ZPass within the state, the New York State Thruway Authority, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). The Port Authority and the MTA charge the $1 fee, the Thruway does not.
According to the MTA’s website, the $1 monthly account service fee was instituted last summer to “help defray the administrative costs of managing our customer’s E-ZPass accounts.” MTA estimates that the monthly surcharge generates $13.2 million annually. The MTA recently announced that it had a budget surplus of over $1 billion.
The bill was sent to the Assembly.

I realize it was only a dollar but it killed me that you prepay tolls which they earn interest on and then charge you a $1 a month to manage that.

I live WAY out on the island and only use my ezpass like 4-5 times a year so the $12 a year they charge me to have it is a HUGE annoyance!!

My DH is a supervisor w/ the MTA...we wouldn't mind seeing a lil of that "surplus". 
That surcharge is ridiculous!

I cancelled, should I say tried to cancel, my E-Z Pass when they did this. Honestly, I may use it once or twice a year so no way was I paying $12 a year
After four letters, returning the tags etc. my account wasn't closed... they said my tags belonged to someone else who lived in Brooklyn. I just wound up cancelling the credit card I used to pay the account.

that would be great - i hate paying it but its so easy and convenient to have that we get screwed on 12 bucks a yr!!

This made me furious that they invent a technology to ease congestion & charge a fee for it. Didn't they save money when they fired the people manning tollbooths?
