Embarrassing question---how do you teach a toddler to wipe their butt??
So I am trying to get my DD independent all together in the bathroom. She is 4 years old. She can wipe pee but poop is just a mess. How do I teach her so that she doesn't put it everywhere??!!

I don't know, but when I taught kindergarten, I always had a select few that "needed help" after going to the bathroom. It always meant that they needed to go to the nurse and call home for a change of clothes. Lots of 5 yr olds still can't wipe properly.

First of all - remember to stress front to back 
I would start with flushable wipes - do hand over hand, and then show her that it is messy.
Get another one - hand over hand - show her that it is messy - or clean - let her know she needs to keep doing it until it is clean.
When you know she is clean - have her do one on her own, and check - that way she gets the practice on her own, but you don't have to worry about the mess getting anywhere...

DD is 4.5 and still doesn wipe her butt by herself. I was wondering the same thing about how to properly teach. Thank goodness she never goes in school.
Would love to hear from some BTDT moms.

I never taught them (my girls are 3 and 4). They just started doing it on their own. The first few times they didn't do the best job so I talked to them about it. Now they know they have to wipe till the TP is clean.

So funny, Mel! With her going to school 4 days a week, I know the "job" is messy if she has to clean herself up. Yikes!!

That's when I would break out the question, "Do you LIKE having poop on your hands? No? Then you need to be more careful!" And then supervise the mother of all hand-scrubbing
