DS "star pupil" in Show and Tell in Pre-K

Last week, DS's teacher told DW that David is the "star student" when it comes to Show and Tell. Every Friday, those kids who want to, bring in something and talk about it in front of the class. Most DC talk only to the teacher, and talk about how they feel about the item. It's great that the kids volunteer to stand in front of the class and talk. That's pretty brave for a lot of kids.

DS, however, talks to the entire class, tells a detailed story about his item, etc. A regular public speaker. Chat Icon Every Friday night, he talks about what he can bring in next Friday.... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

At least I don't have to worry about him being a wallflower in school. Chat Icon

That's awesome! You must be doing great things at home to make him such a great speaker. Do tell......

We are always getting him to read, interact with the TV, answer questions that the TV is asking, pretty much constant interaction but without pressuring him. He is a self-learner. He doesn't like to be pushed, so if we "lead him to water, he won't drink", until HE decides he wants to do it. Since we know how he works, we just work within those boundaries. Lately, he takes a few blank sheets of paper, binds them into a book with "sticky tape", gives a title to his book, and writes (by himself most of the time) and illustrates the book. He even has a pseudoname for his work. When he isn't writing his own books, he reads (by himself) 1st and 2nd grade books. Again, we don't push, so if he doesn't want to read one day, I'll read to him.

I honestly think that TV is a good tool. We have Closed Captioning on the TV, so he can read the words they are saying. We are sitting with him for 99% of his TV watching time, so we are interacting with him, and he is interacting with us and the TV.

He's in karate, and pre-K, so he is encouraged by adults other than us to be involved and interact with other kids.

I'm definitely not saying we have all the answers, we've just figured out what works for DS, and we're able to roll with it. Hopefully, we'll have similar results with DD. She loves imitating her big brother, so I'm sure we will.

Believe me, we are very proud! External Image

He definitely has his "less than angelic" moments, but again, it's all a matter of learning how to roll with what he is doing.

DD is turning into a drama queen, so it looks like we may have an entirely different set of rules to play by very soon... Chat Icon Chat Icon
