DS finally arrived - birth story - long
My little guy is finally here! Last Tuesday I was feeling kind of yucky (EDD +1) and started to get dizzy and sleepy. I had already been on bed rest since early Aug for high blood pressure. I went to the hospital and my blood pressure was 141/102. Needless to say they decided since I was past my EDD they would induce. L&D was so packed (full moon) I spent the night on a stretcher in the L&D recovery area b/c antepartum, postpartum and all L&D rooms were taken. I did my first round of Cervidil Tuesday at 10pm and Wed at 10 am I was barely 1cm and only 10% effaced. I decided to eat so I had to wait 4 hours and got second round at 3:30 pm Wed afternoon. I was moved to an L&D room around 5:00 pm . At 3:30 am on Thurs morn I was 2cm and 50% effaced and needless to say not happy. I wanted to eat again so my DH came at 4:00 am and gave me a sandwich. My mom (who is a midwife) had gone home to sleep for the night and was coming back in around 8-9 to sit with me so DH could sleep. Next thing I know my midwife is in the room talking about going straight to pitosin at 8:30. I was so tired and helpless at this point I never thought to ask about why we were skipping the next round of Cervidil as this could have led me closer to a c-section. Mom arrived and straightened everything out and I got my third round of Cervidil at 11:30 am on Thurs. Around 3:30 pm on Thurs the contractions started kicking in and mom was gone but my dad, sister and DH were with me. Was not fun…..I really was trying to avoid an epi but by 9:00 pm I was done from the exhaustion of being in the hospital for 2.5 days with no progress, contractions with no result, minimal dilation and essentially a clear liquid diet for 85% of the time. Anyway, mom got back around, got my epi around 9:30 and I wanted to marry the anithesthiologist (sp?).
They checked me at 11:00 pm and I was 6 cm (a miracle at this point!) Around 11:30 pm on Thurs they started the pitosin and DS was no reacting well at all. They started and stopped it 3x thru the night. His heartrate was up and down, variables everywhere, late and early decelerations…apparently all not good. I was so lucky to have my mom there monitoring it all night while I tried to sleep. Around 6:30 am my mom looked me in the face and said “there is an 80% chance you are going to have a c-section b/c this little guy is not doing well” and my thought was just as long as the baby is safe I don’t care. My midwife came in and checked – I was finally 10 CM!!!!! My midwife came back in and discussed one more option with mom (they had done 3 other things that I won’t get into details of) and at 6:45 they did an amniotic infusion to see if the little guy was sitting on the cord. It seemed to work! I woke up at 9:45 and said I need to push and I only have about an hour’s worth of strength left. About 15 pushes later our little Thomas was born 59 minutes into my one hour deadline at 10:44 weighing 6lbs, 8 oz and 20 inches with apparently “one of the best cone heads” my mother has ever seen! My mom managed the labor and caught him b/c my midwife was with another patient who was supposed to beat me to the finish line (she delivered at 10:48).
Needless to say, we are in love and he is doing just fine. I have fallen ieven more in love with DH and this whole experience has been incredible. Thomas is breastfeeding like it is his job and is quite a cuddle bug.
