Donald Trump Donates Portion Of Salary To National Park Service

WASHINGTON ? President Donald Trump is following up on a campaign promise by donating his salary to the National Park Service.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer on Monday presented Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke a check for $78,333.32 ? the president’s first quarter salary ? during a daily press briefing at the White House.

Zinke said his department will use the money to improve maintenance of the nation’s battlefields. He added that he was “excited about that opportunity.”

During the campaign, Trump vowed he would not accept a salary as president. The law requires he receive one, however, so he is donating it instead. The president earns $400,000 per year, and Trump plans to donate all of it, according to the White House.

Last month, Spicer said Trump wanted the press to help him decide where to donate his money, so that he could “avoid scrutiny.”

Trump’s affinity for the nation’s parks is not found in his proposed budget. The proposal calls for a 12 percent, or $1.5 billion, cut in the Interior Department’s budget. Progressive groups have also called into question the maintenance backlog at the NPS, arguing it was being used as a reason to increase the privatization of national parks.

The president had an early run-in with the National Park Service as well. One day after he was sworn into office, Trump pressured the NPS director to substantiate unfounded claims of unprecedented attendance at his inauguration.

Re: Donald Trump Donates Portion Of Salary To National Park Service

Of course, this token amount, in the face of a $1.5 billion cut didn't sit well with the Sierra Club...

http://bipartisanreport.com/2017/04/03/trump-donates-his-salary-to-national-parks-service-their-response-left-him-silent/

Today President Trump announced his plans to donate the first installment of his salary to the National Parks Service. If you look at this on the surface level it looks like a great and generous thing for Trump to do. If you look a little closer though, you will see that Trumps budget proposal is calling for $1.5 billion in cuts to the Department of the Interior which actually operates the National Park Service, cuts which will constitute about 12% of the department’s total budget.

The Sierra Club is offended by not only the amount but also the tactless way Trump went about announcing to the world the news of the donation. No time was wasted on their behalf chastising President Trump for what is ultimately an insult and an empty gesture.

Michael Brune, the environmental group’s Executive Director, said in a statement.

‘If Donald Trump is actually interested in helping our parks, he should stop trying to slash their budgets to historically low levels. This publicity stunt is a sad consolation prize as Trump tries to stifle America’s best idea.’

The “publicity stunt” being referred to by Brune occurred at the White House daily press briefing. Press Secretary Sean Spicer made a huge hoopla of handing the Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke the cheque, totalling $78,333.32.

The donation is about one quarter of his annual presidential salary, equating to only about .005% of the amount that he cut from the budget of the Interior Department’s budget. The cuts will cause a serious blow to the National Parks Service, which currently has “$12 billion needed to address the current backlog of park maintenance,” according to Brune.

Donald Trump Donates Portion Of Salary To National Park Service

From the alt national park service fb page-

Donald J. Trump today donated his first pay check of $78,000 to our National Park Service as an attempt to silence our coalition. This was a simple attempt for the new administration to greenwash the American public. Please remember how much Trump is cutting from the EPA, National Park Service, NOAA, NASA, Department of Agriculture, Department of Human Health Services, and the Chemical Safety Board... Trump plans to cut the EPA budget by -31% which is about $2,523,364,970, National Park Service budget by -12% which is about $360,000,000, and so on. #RESIST

He can't win no matter what he did with his donation. Budget cuts are going to happen. The US is in debt up to its eyeballs. We can't balance a budget to save our lives (and this has happened under dem and republican presidents) Nobody will ever be happy with any cuts that he makes. He could have just said screw it I will keep the salary. He doesn't need the money so he said he would give it up. He can't even get credit for that.

No, he doesn't get credit for that. Come on, please admit you know this is nothing more that another way for him to try and get people to say "Oh isn't he wonderful!!" Him doing this has absolutely NOTHING to do with him being generous or altruistic. You have to see that! If he was such a generous guy, the donations to his foundation would have gone to charity instead of funding himself. The money he collected "for the veterans" would have gone TO the veterans without people having to "remind" him.
It's just another "Look at me" moment for someone who's ego is in constant need of stroking.

My point is that if he took a salary people would say he is greedy. No matter where he donates it will always be him trying to get people to say he is wonderful. Not everything is a conspiracy!

You are right - everything isn't a conspiracy.
And, I wouldn't think any legitimate president needs to donate his salary (Yup - I don't see him as legitimate, I see him as an embarrassment.) I wouldn't think that taking his salary was greedy - it's his salary. But, again, this "man" is using this to try and look good and make the what does he call them, the Forgotten men and women, think that he cares. You have to see that!
It's true, he doesn't need the money. But when he is cutting huge funds to important programs so he can piss away even more on a stupid wall that will never be completed and even if it was, it will never do anything to keep us safer, and he has a wife who refuses to live in DC so the country has to shell out ridiculous amount of EXTRA money for security while his building rakes in yet more money for his empire- yeah, I give him ZERO credit! His $78000+ doesn't even scratch the surface.

I can't deny that debt is a huge problem for the country, and cuts do need to be made. But if he was so concerned:
- he'd curb the $3 million a pop Mar A Lago visits, which are also rough for that area's economy.
- he'd either make Melania and Barron move to the WH, or somehow contribute to what is another massive expense.
- he'd contribute to the costs of protection when his sons go all over the world on business. Given the way he is monetizing the presidency, I don't think it would affect his bottom line too much if he had to contribute a little.

His presidency is costing us a fortune and he has no issue soaking taxpayers for the above.

F@ck him and his 78000 publicity stunt. He is such an asshole.

$54 billion EXTRA for the military, which already spends more than the next several militaries combined (and the current plan has almost nothing going to the actual soldiers on the ground), plus $26 billion (and probably more) for a wall that won't serve any purpose, several million a month for vacations to his own resort that he's making tons of money off of taxpayers for, conflicts of interest that he's making tons of money off of us for, and we're supposed to give him credit for a couple hundred thousand?

That's like saying "Well, someone stole my brand-new car, but at least they left my air freshener here, so I gotta give them credit for that..."

If he was just going to donate his salary back to the department why did he bother to cut the budget.
