does your insurance company cover the ultrascreen?

i'm not sure if mine does. (blue cross blue shield blue care plan). i just scoured the benefits manual and didn't find any information about it. my OB made it sound like it might not be covered. i guess i will have to call the company directly.

has anyone else run into this issue?

Mine does....I have Oxford.

You should ask the doctor if she has to write it up a certain way or do a referral, I need to have a referral.

Did she say why it wouldn't be covered?

i have empire bc bs ppo and its covered under maternity care. maybe she meant the 3D one isn't covered? its part of prenatal care so i think they are required to cover it

I have the same insurance. Thankfully, nothing has been questioned by the insurance this far at all, and I don't even have a deductible for my hospital stay either!! So it's free!!

I agree with above poster, maybe doc was referring to the 3D sono.

it was the regular ultrasound that she was referring to, not the 3D. she basically said that because this test just started being offered to all pg women regardless of age, some companies still don't cover it if you're under 35.

i am going to call my insurance company tomorrow.

Re: does your insurance company cover the ultrascreen?

My doctor had told me there was a chance my insurance wouldn't cover the Ultrascreen. I opted for it regardless. Thankfully, United Healthcare has covered everything "medically necessary" so far...

I didn't even give it a second thought but now maybe I should. I did call to notify them (GHI) after my first visit but they said it was no longer necessary...thanks for the warning.

Re: does your insurance company cover the ultrascreen?

hm, my doctor didn't say anything about the possibility of the test not being covered. I guess I should call tomorrow to find out- I have Aetna HMO.

Thanks for the heads up.

Mine was covered - I have United Healthcare. I also have a deductible so I wound up paying about $80 out of pocket for it.

Re: does your insurance company cover the ultrascreen?

I have Aetna and it was not covered. I'm allowed one non-medically necessary sonogram in my pregnancy and they counted it as that.

I have Aetna as well and they told me that basically everything that my dr. told me to get (including the ultrascreen) is covered as long as my dr. is in network - maybe you have a different type of Aetna?

I believe the coverage depends upon what you're company signs up for. I called multiple times to make sure this was right. I was only allowed one medically necessary sono, and they consider the Ultrascreen elective, not necessary. For my level II, I had actually gone to the hospital before this for some bleeding, so the doc wrote that down as the reason for my level II to get it covered, even though I was fine at that point. Before I have anything, even bloodwork, I have to call insurance with a procedure code and get them to look it up. Very annoying!!!!
