they don't but a mattress like it would in the crib cause the baby can not breath in it in there. For Sids realted.
That is what the lady told me at the graco class i took
So that is why they just put a pad.

Yes the graco pnp that have a bassinet portion comes with a mattress. It's the same one you use on the bottom once your done with the bassinet part.
You pop the mattress out and put it on the bottom part when they outgrow the bassinet.
I wouldn't use anything else in there, gaps are not good, a perfect fit is needed for baby's safety.
ETA: DD slept well in there for the 1st 2 months in was in our room, and the one downstairs she used til about 4 months old.
