Does cereal in the bottle really help a newborn sleep more?

My baby is only 6 weeks but still up every 2 hours all day long (and therefore not sleeping much - me or h im.) He's eating about 4- 5 oz at a time but doesn't seem satisfied, however doesn't want more formula.

A few people suggested adding some cereal to his bottle. Does it really work? How do you do it? Does it have to be rice?

Statistics show it doesn't work and I personally wouldn't do it.

I had to do it for reflux issues, and no, I don't think it helped DS sleep more. I wouldn't do it unless I had to (for reflux)

I asked my peds if i could do.. and he was against it. He said that introducing cereal too early can cause the onset of diabetes.

i would just check with your peds before doing and see what they say.

I had to put it in my sons bottles bc at 2 months he was drinking 35 ounces a day - they do recommend not doing it though unless needed. How much formula is he drinking each day?

It also did not help him sleep better!

DD is 7 months old and eating 3 tablespoons rice PLUS BFing right before bed and it doesn't stop her from waking after 5 hours to eat again.

DS gets rice cereal in all his bottles because he's being treated for reflux. It doesn't make any difference in his sleep habits, but it did reduce his spit-ups significantly!

If you're thinking about doing this, I would check with your pediatrician first.

DS has had rice cereal in his bottles since he was 6 weeks b/c of his reflux...it worked like a charm on the reflux....he still gets up at night though and is a horrible sleeper.

When I had my twins the ped explained to me that in general babies are at least 3-4 months old before they are ready to sleep through the night..neurologically speaking...of course there are wide variations to this..he might just not be ready yet to sleep for long stretches of time.

I put it in DS bottle at 6 weeks because he was spitting up alot and I wanted to make his bedtime bottle specifically thicker. But it didnt help him sleep more however he was already sleeping about 6+ hours at the time.

I know at least 2 people who do claim it helped them get more sleep

Is Landon only getting formula or is some bm? If its only formula then I would ask your dr.

I think you're fine then. I think it is only if its more than 32 oz of formula.

Re: Does cereal in the bottle really help a newborn sleep more?

I wouldnt do it... at 6 weeks old babies wake up every few hours to eat, its just what they do. Putting cereal in the bottle is usually only recommended when babies have reflux i think? i hope he starts sleeping more for you soon. Chat Icon hang in there, my DD started sleeping through the night at 2 months old.. so it could be soon!!
