Does anyone see any good things about working in NYC???

Just wondering...what do you think....do we have any good things going for us??

The one thing I will say is that my principal and AP pretty much leave me alone...but that is also the benefit of being on the 3rd floorChat Icon

1. you have kick *** benefits that dont' cost anything

2. you are part of a great union...the UFT offers amazing programs and events for teachers that so many people do not take advantage

3. there is nothing like a classroom in NYC... i miss the vibrancy, the pulse of the city and its kids

4. IMO, I miss helping the type of kids that need me most. i don't feel like so responsible out here on LI. . . i know they had a solid education all the way through, where in the city, compared to some of the teachesr in my building, i was really doing a good job.

but i have to say NYC does nothing to support its teachers in terms of paying them what they deserve... or treating them like professionals. you all have to act like dogs that obey the boss' commands...even though a lot of the time they make no pedagogical sense and actualyl hurt the kids. i love having the autonomy and the TRUST to do whatever I want in my room.

It is only my first year in NYC, but I have to say that I already see differences iwith my administration. I know I am luky in my school, but I have to say they are AMAZING. They are supportive and helpful. My co-workers are amazing too.
Of course the pay sucks, although as mentioned the benefits are great and we do not have enough technology.

There are ups and downs of it just like anywhere else I suppose.

I do miss the experiences I had on Long Island though. In the city I think it is harder to create different types of relationships with y our kids. I can NOT stay after school for anything because staying even five minutes can cost me an hour on the commute home. Also, the neighborhood isn't the best and I would be worried to be there after dark. I enjoy the after school things, the concerts, the drama productions, etc. I wish that NYC had more of those events and that I could be involved.

Overall, I like working in NYC. The benefits and pension are great. I work 10 minutes from home. The opportunity for field trips are amazing. Personally, I can see that I am making a difference in the lives of children and their families.
