Do you think the U.S. could head towards another Civil War?

We're heading down to Spoleto Festival in Charleston, S.C. with another couple and, being that it was the "birthplace" of the Civil War, we were talking about the possibility of another U.S. Civil War.

We've heard talking heads and pundits bring up secession just in this past year. People seem much more angry, distrustful and hateful with the government/politics then in the past. My college roommate lives in Charleston and his BIL owns a gun store--business is booming because people are stockpiling guns and ammo.

Do you ever see it happening again? It if it did, do you think the U.S. of A would remain intact?

I personally don't see it happening but anything is possibly nowadays. I just don't think it'd ever get that far.

Funny you mention about guns & ammo because that was what I heard too. I heard that you can't even buy certain ammunition because people are buying stockpiles of it in anticipation of a civil war.

I admit, I think it may happen and it scares me.

I've actually been thinking about that question myself the past year or so. The nation seems more and more divided to me, but rather than being divided by state lines, it's divided politically/idealogically between individuals and governmental parties, so I don't know that it really lends itself towards a civil war the same way we think of the Civil War in the 1860s, where it's one state or region against another. But then again, look at history... every great empire eventually falls. I hope it never happens, but I don't know.

I don't think so. The US is a developed society. To me, civil wars happen in countries that aren't that developed.

That's JMO, who knows these days?

I honestly don't think the country is any more divided now than at any other time since the Civil War. Pick your topic (race, religion, gender, etc) and there are huge differences, and people talking about Civil Wars. There are always people who are very vocal, and now that we have the Internet, those vocal few are heard the most.

Everything said here was brought up during our (liquor-fueled) debate. Down here (SC) there's a really different vibe, very tense. Probably because of the non-stop political ads for the upcoming primary. States' rights and socialism and illegal immigrants...it's got the "confederates" riled up!

Revolution and much civil unrest / civil disobedience? Yes.

Full out civil war? Probably not -- federal government is just too well armed and citizens wouldn't stand a shot.

Having gone to college in Charleston, as a NYer....what I can tell you, the vast majority of the people down there are still fighting the civil war from the last time. They are still so entrenched in it, I cant tell you how many times I had to "defend" being a "yankee". It is a very deep rooted part of their history and comes up in conversation all the time down there. Some are fanatical about it.

I wouldnt use Charleston as your basis though bc they can be extreme when it comes to the N vs S and the civil war mentality. Its a big part of the reason I eventually transferred home. Charleston is the heart of the deep south. The conversations have always skewed that way, at least in my experiences.

I don't think that there are issues that would bring us to civil war any time soon, however the stockpiling of guns and ammo scares the heck out of me.

I think anything is possible. Why do you think so many people are stock piling guns and ammo? kwim? It's scaring the heck outta me too.

I think if anything it would be a Revolutionary war... let's just hope that it does not even get to that point.

Haven't read everyone's posts ..just a few and I have to say that even this thought is BS. I mean I could see people getting mad, buying guns and ammo, but honestly..are they out of their minds? I feel that this country IS divided, there IS mud slinging. But..you want to revert yourself back to the 1800s?? My goodness. I thought we came so far...everyday we have a new smart phone coming out, a new blog, a new cancer drug but nope let us just go to war because people have to draw a line in the sand and one side is right and one is wrong..no in between.

by the way...to the OP..this isn't directed towards you just the simple thought in general.

Having lived in the South for MANY years, having a gun and stocking on bullets is not new. They did it for Y2K, etc...

You will hear about the confederate flags, slavery in the South like he just happened yesterday. Some of them want to relive it (or I guess never got over it!) and love to hear their great-grandpa stories of the old glory of the South. They want to revive the South to the pre Civil War.

No, I don't think we are going to have a Civil War.

There is just too much $$$ at stake now to even think that a civil war would happen in this day in age.

Big business rules this country-as long as a war would too deeply cut into the bottom line for most. It will just never happen.

btw what EXACTLY are ppl soo "angry" about now? I am sorry I am sick of the south taking the whole disgrutled underdog thing to the level of lets stockpile weapons, lets have autocratic views... give me a break. If you don't like it (what is happening in this country) why dont you focus on electing non corrupt officials or ones that focus on the job and not the girfriend of the month, not Vern from the piggly wiggly because he is a nice fella. Stop making us yankees take care of all the thinking and decisions and then blaming us when they don't turn out the way you would like.

Also I am appalled that in this day in age that ppl have confederate flag beach towels and pool floats......I was on vacation in myrtle beach a few years ago and not only were there no ppl of color at my hotel or at the beach of my or the ajoining hotels - I aslo saw MANY of these towels and floats. I was saddened to no end and the fact that my neices and nephews were there made me even sicker....I will never go back again.
