Do you leave new material with a sub? (math especially)

Especially Math ???? Chat Icon

Last week I was a little annoyed, that not only was I thrown in LAST MINUTE into a math class (Chat Icon I detest math, math phobia, whatever yuou wanna call it Chat Icon )

So its 8th grade math, cant remember what Chat Icon it was TOTALLY NEW TO THEM, NEW TO ME Chat Icon and she left tons of work with no answer key! Chat Icon uhmmm, dont think so lady. Chat Icon plus there were 2 TAs in the room who you'd think were just hired that day.

It was the first time I went off their sub plans, but I must say I did pretty damn good. I let the kids make a chart in their books similar to the text, explaining the formulas, etc. I always like to give them good visuals, examples and steps to work with for future assignments.
Im a visual learner, and Im not the quickest with math, so I do it very simple, easy steps.
and then we also did the first few HW examples so they werent completely lost for hw. I thought that was only fair.

Another question about math.
Do you require your children to CHECK or SHOW WORK??
I remember those were such KEY WORDS when I was younger.
CHECK and SHOW WORK! ITWAS the LAW!!
now kids just write the answers!
I try when Im subbing to tell them how important it is to show work, have scrap paper, think it through on scrap. I never see kids WORK OUT a problem, or write out any steps, and NEVER EVER see them check their work...
whats going on? is it me ???

I usually don't unless it is a permanent sub in my building because they know the curriculum. We use Everyday Math and it can be somewhat confusing, so I look at the lesson and if it is easy enough (I teach 2nd and there is alot of reviewing) then I will leave it, but if it something totally new to the kids, then no. I would rather teach it to them myself so I can see who is getting it, struggling, etc. However, that being said, I am sure that any sub would do find teaching 2nd grade math!Chat Icon

As a sub (and math certified) I love when they leave me things to do. Usually when I do sub for math it is by request so they know I can do it.

I was in for business the other day (also certified) and was able to teach a lesson and had a great time.

They always leave me things to do and I can teach it all, but im just shocked that teachers would have their class taught something totally new by a stranger. I know your students become your babies, and there are so many with different needs etc. so someone that doesnt know all this, wouldnt know how to approach your class, and math especially...
