I bet there are certain visual "types" that appeal to people, whether one is aware of it or not, so I voted yes.
I also think there are definitely types that turn people off and they avoid these people.

I think it goes in stages.
As little children, we don't choose friends based on looks. But then comes adolescence and people may not CHOOSE friends based on looks but people are certainly shunned because of them - to say this doesn't happen, is a fallacy.
As we grow, I'd like to think that people change and realize that looks in friendships do not really matter. However, I have been witness to social situations as an adult where I have seen groups of "beautiful people" - not one unattractive person in the bunch.
I had been quite heavy at one point. I always had friends regardless of what I looked like but sadly, once I lost a significant amount of weight, people who once shunned or mocked me, treated me very different. Fortunately, I was smart enough to see through it and did not start or perpetuate any sort of friendship with those people.

Well since the question is if it's subconscious or not, I can't say I don't do it because if it's in the subconscious, then I'm not controlling it. I don't think I do, but I'm the first to admit that I think all my friends are pretty. But I also think that most people are attractive in general. I really can't classify anyone I know as *ugly*.

I agree. I also believe it has a lot to do with the stage of life you're in.
In high school I mainly hung out with a clique of people who were all very similar to me. It wasn't based on looks as much as we all tended to look the same, wear similar clothes, etc.
That's one of the reason I like this board so much. You base your judments more on personality that comes through in posts than on looks. It makes me think about all of the people I missed out on befriending because they looked different.

i tend to gravitate towards people that like to shop, that are outgoing and personable and kind.
i tend to hang out with people that share my interests. a HUGE interest of mine is shopping, fashion etc. and a good style and good fasion sense definitely impresses me- ON FIRST IMPRESSION ONLY
of course if i happened to meet a nice person and fashion was not their forte i would NEVER reject them - ever- and some of my bestest friends are not into shopping etc.
but its nice to have friends that share my interests. meaning, i happend to get along realyl well with the girls on the fashion board for example! kwim?
i hope that doesnt sound shallow!!!

i think subconsciously many of us do that.
i think i do after reading the question.
Example.
im walking down the street and spot a hot looking coat on a woman. I would stop her, ask her where she got it, and 9/10 times it would lead to a friendly conversation. I've made friends this way.
and def on first impression and first thought, i know its superficial of me, but by looks only i feel that i would have more in common with someone who had their nails and hair done, and a nice outfit on as opposed to someone with bedhead.

I consider myself VERY friendly..I will talk to anyone and as long as those people aren't picky about who they are friends with and snotty, I am friends with them...so, NO, I do not choose my friends based off of looks, etc..
