In my opinion, monorail resorts are very worth their cost. Especially with young children.

Sign up for emails from mousesavers.com and from disneyworld.com. Disney sometimes sends out PIN codes for personalized discounts. Also, if you work with a travel agent, which doesn't cost you anything, they will check for discounts as soon as the codes are released. I've used Your Magical Journeys three times and they've gotten us discounts the day Disney offered them.

We went last summer and there were several discounts offered during the summer months.

1. i remember a few months back there were amazing disney hotel discounts, when are they offered and for what weeks?

The discounts come and go - They usually offer some great ones Nov/Dec for the winter early spring. Then it depends on their booking. Jan or Feb they might release some for the spring.

Historically they offer free dining (CS for values and the regular one for mods and deluxes - used to be the regular for all locations).

Check out mousesavers.com - she has an area that lists historically WHEN they release them and what they have offered in the past. Also check what is currently available on her site. I also like disboards.com - they are great over there - and often you will hear chatter about possible releasing of new codes before they are out - (you will hear - something like - around x date there should be a new code coming out - and I think it will be free dining or a gift card or a discount etc.

I think there is a room only discount out now - you CAN use it as a package - there is a way to do so - but you only get discount on the room portion which is still a decent deal. In order to get the meal plan you MUST book tickets with the room.

Just an FYI if you think you want to go early sept etc. or another time that always has a discount but no discount is currently available you CAN book at the regular rate and when the code is released simply call them up and give them the code and they will adjust your package to the discounted price. You can't stack discounts - you get one or the other - for example you can't do free dining AND discount off the room.

2. can u recommend an off site resort with at least 1 bedroom and kitchenette and a great pool not too far from wdw?

I only stayed off site with my family when I was very young - you will definitely save money - but if you have young children and want to return to the resort for breaks mid day you will lose a chunk of your day something to think about - I think offsite works better with slightly older children who can spend all day or later at night in the parks where your hotel is more of a bed to sleep in than park of your "destination". I know there are several people on here who booked off site and LOVED where they stayed maybe do a search.

3. are there suites at the wdw moderate resorts?

There are the wilderness Cabins - which aren't suites - but do have a kitchenette and are more like a suite than a hotel room - if that is what you want. I think - but never looked into it so not 100% sure - but I think the only mod that has a suite is the Coronado Springs resort b.c it is a convention hotel.

I know that the values now offer family suites which have a small kitchette and are supposed to be about the same price as a moderate room.

4. and are the delux resorts basic rooms really $400+ a night!?!Chat Icon

Yes some of them are - but they are MUCH bigger (depending on the deluxe, the time of the year etc). Sometimes they are less - Last year we got the poly with a room only discount at 40% off rack rate. So we saved a lot of money that way.

The deluxes you are paying for convenience - the monorail ones are more expensive than say AKL - b.c you are ON the monorail and it is so easy to get to the MK. Also it really depends on the category room you want- you really don't need a MK view to have a great trip - a garden room can be just as nice.

5. also travel agent or slef book??

Self book! TA is nice to have but definitely NOT needed. AAA has some packages that are ONLY available to AAA members - but their agents don't have a clue about disney. You can only get the AAA rate from them though (room only discount CAN be booked through disney itself - but the package can only come from AAA). It is only worth going through them if you are going at a time that historically doesn't offer any discounts.

There are some companies (they are mentioned on disboards) who will monitor discounts and will book for you and then adjust if a better deal comes out - BUT - I know friends and it depends on the agent they booked with. Some didn't make the switch until they called and asked others did it themselves.

I also like to have control over my booking. If you book through a TA and a code comes out you have to rely on them to get it changed. Sometimes the popular hotels go FAST when the discount comes out - so if you don't jump on it then you lose it. So if a code comes out and your TA is out or doesn't get around to it you might lose it - whereas, if you book through disney (and the price is the same unless the agency is throwing in some extras like a photo or something) you can call and make the change. If you book through an agent some people have reported having trouble making dining reservations on their own.

One more hint. Go to WDW site and register your email. Price out and save a couple of quotes and order their free trip planning DVD. Their marketing company tends to send out private (meaning ONLY the person on the email can use it you can't give it to your friend or family members) codes for things like free dining or discount off a package. My parents went with us on DD's 1st trip and since then they regularly send THEM emails - not us - unfortunately I can't use them even though they are to MY email b.c they are addressed to my parents. But some of them are good deals esp if you haven't traveled to WDW before or in a while.
