look into getting a refurbished one. My mother got my nephew a good one, but it was cheaper b/c it was refurbished.
Then again, he's 7. Maybe for a 4 year old I'd get a kid's one. I've seen a cute one at Bed Bath and Beyond

my DS uses my canon SD. its a point and shoot. DS is almost 3

most of the kids camera don't take very good pictures- i would look into a camera like the Canon PowerShot canon powershot - this camera is waterproof to a certain depth and drop friendly - i would look on canon's site to find a refurb one to save some money
