Did you wake your sleeping newborn to eat?

DD is a great sleeper...however today she has been sleeping 3 almost 4 hour stretches and I've been feeding her every three hours.

When I woke her earlier she ate a liittle and then fell asleep...Is there a trick to keeping them awake to eat?
and should I be waking her up?

How old is your DD? If she's VERY newborn, like less than 2 weeks old, I might consider waking her.

I'd figure that she'll wake up when she is hungry. Their hunger is really strong---they can't sleep through it.

Re: Did you wake your sleeping newborn to eat?

She is 4 days old, I figured I shouldn't wake her...

i guess I shouldn't worry about getting her on a schedule from day 1?

when should I have her on a routine with eating?

Personally, at 4 days old, I'd be waking her. Especially if you're BFing (don't know if you are!).

Also, just FYI, DD didn't get into a feeding schedule until she was about 8 days old. Then she was like clockwork every 2 hours! Chat Icon

I also woke DS - I was told to -by the ped and the nurses at the hospital. I was BF so not sure if that makes a difference.

Although I got such GRIEF about it from my mom who kept telling me to NEVER wake a sleeping baby Chat Icon

My ped always told me my boys were at a good weight and I did not have to wake them for a bottle.

Re: Did you wake your sleeping newborn to eat?

As long as she is at or above her birth weight, you don't need to. If not - then yes you will need to wake her (double check with your Ped.) I had to wake DD for 3 weeks after b/c she hadn't reached her birth weight. It was really difficult - we tried cold washclothes, tickling her feet, pulling her arms above her head (like she was stretching) etc. Its not easy. Good luck

In the beginning I had too because he was jaundice and the ped told me to make sure he eats every 3 hours. Once his levels went down, he would wake up and eat when he was hungry.

Re: Did you wake your sleeping newborn to eat?

At that age, my ped told me that if DS didn't wake up after 5 hours to wake him and feed him, but he lost a good amount of weight the first week. After the first few weeks, she told me to let him sleep, he would wake when he was hungry.

Re: Did you wake your sleeping newborn to eat?

During the day - YES!! To get her days and nights straight, we had to. She ate ever 3 hours during the day.
At night - NEVER!! Once she figured out day and night, she was able to sleep through the night...at 6 weeks old (and still going strong at 15 months).
