Did you try to lose weight on your own before going to an RE??

DH and I decided to try to lose some weight before going to an RE since many of you have said that that's what your RE suggested before hand. We decided for both personal and financial reasons to wait (I know many of you suggested we go now, but since we seem to only have male factor issues Dh is still of a mind to try "naturally" if he gets healthier), and both want to lose at least 15-20 lbs before we go to an RE.

Just wanted to know if I'm alone in this, or did you guys try to lose the weight before you went to the dr.

Sometimes I feel that we did this to ourselves....being so overweight is our fault and we're to blame for our infertility issues. At least attempting to lose weight might give us some hope that we can do this on our own.

YES i tried and it didnt work Chat Icon
Mostly because almost all the fertility meds make you gain weight as a side effect. I would put on about 10-12 lbs each cycle and lose only about 9-10 of them...so I was always carrying more weight.

Finally I gave up and said, well once I have a baby Iw ill lose it all then cause it was making me crazy!

GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!!!!!!!!

I alos tried and was unsuccessful as well.

If you have MF and DH is overweight I would suggest he get his insulin level checkes. DH does not have diabetes but he was found to have inuslin resistance and this effects teh sperm. He was started on Metformin and there was some improvement.

Good luck to youChat Icon

mmmm...get his insulin checked..we never thought of that. And with his mom being a diabetic, I don't know why we never thought of doing this. I didn't know it affected the sperm. I will have a talk with him about that.

ETA: even more than before I want for us to lose the weight. I know that diet can affect your insulin levels, and we just joined ediets.com, so I hope that we can get some of this lard off of our arses!!

I have been trying to lose weight most of my life. I go up and down but in the end...mostly up. Unfortunately. I lost weight before I got pg naturally last year but then miscarried, I was still very overweight tho.

Right now I am the heaviest I have ever been (2 IVF cycles) but....I am pg...so who knows....

Good luck, it is good to lose it no matter what! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

We did ww before going. DH lost 30 and I lost 25.....still plateauing at 25 but trying to continue losing even now. No fertility meds for me yet (probably Clomid in next few months) but can't hurt, right? WW registration is free right now!

My RE recommended I try to take off 20-30 pounds before my next IVF cycle so that's what I am in the process of doing....lost 9 pounds - 21 more to go!

Ive seen 2 RE's over the past year and neither of them ever recommended losing weight Chat Icon

I guess Ive gone the other side of things, havent lost any weight and been on Metformin for over 12 months (with ovulation) and clomid for 5 cycles (with 3 IUI's) and still nothing.

Just only recently over the past 4 weeks have I started to change my diet and have lost 10 lbs already! So hopefully the weight loss will finally be my success.
