I can't begin to tell you how frightened this kind of thing makes me.
I have two little boys and I worry about them all the time. I think about the fact that some mother kissed her kid goodbye at the end of January and sent him off to college with pride in her heart... and now she is dealing with the idea that her baby is gone because he showed up in class. It kills me.

I worry too for my children.It is so scary that you let your kids out your door never knowing if this would be the last day you see them

I can't help but wonder if the shooter once impressed his dad with his rifle cleaning skills. 
my heart breaks for those people. and fears for the next time. and the next time. and the next time after that.

This kills me. And I am one that hopes my son will be blessed to be able to go to the school of his choice...but this....this is so scary

They should be safe, but it is so hard to secure a college campus. I was on a committee that studied this when I was in college, and there is always an issue, most of which revolves around being able to let people out safely if the campus has to lock-down. It is a tough call, and most campuses do not want metal detectors on all of their doors

Unless the college is completely gated and has armed guards and metal detectors at each and every opening to every single building on every block, it is virtually impossible to secure a college campus. Some college campuses are enormous and not each school has the funding and endowments to spend on that kind of security. The smaller colleges certainly do not.
It seems to me that some of the burden may have to be on students and faculty to keep themselves safe. They will all have to be mindful of who is around them and monitor the behaviors of their peers on a much higher level. When someone just doesn't "seem right," get them help - even if it is an anonymous tip to a school counselor.

what was really crazy was that i had just finished reading jodi picoult's 19 minutes, which is about a hs school shooting, when i first heard about this shooting...

I just finished it too....so disturbing but the worst past is that it is way too believable.
I don't know what has happened to our society....
