Did anyone Break Tradition when it came to...

naming your child??

For ex. in DH's family the tradition is to name the first boy after the husbands father and the first girl after the husbands mother. If you go on to have more children then the second girl would be named after the wife's mother or the second boy would be named after the wife's father.

I kept this tradition with our Son. I named him after my FIL out of respect, and it is something my DH really really wanted to do. ( My son is his first grandchild) I also happened to love the name so everything worked out well.

Well we have been talking about adding a new addition to our family. It is always a sore subject b/c if the baby is a girl I DO NOT want to name it after his mother. Not b/c I dont like her but b/c I really really hate the name with a passion. DH thinks its horrible that we followed tradition with one child and we wouldn't with the other and that it would make breaking the news to his mom even worse.

Wondering if anyone else out there is/was in the same position and what you did about it.

Re: Did anyone Break Tradition when it came to...

personally i feel naming a child after someone can give a idea of what that child will be like. every child needs to have there own "place" in the family. i do ot like jr's one it can get to confussing in the house and two i have seen whqat can happen wehn an exspectation of a child goes in a differant directio. jmo
every child gets a name by the parents picking which can be hard in itself at times. so i say no go with how you feel you should name the child not because you feel you have too!

Maxine, that is a standard Italian traditon as far as I know My mom's family did that & consequently she has a lot of cousins witht he same names! Chat Icon
My mom & her sisters didn'' do that. They started their own traditon of using the father's first name for the baby's middle name. My mom also used a version of her first name for my middle name.

But I guess since you did it once, it is hard to break from it. Is there a differnet version of her name you could use or make it a middle name or something?
What is her name?

If you have another boy would you name him after your father?

Re: Did anyone Break Tradition when it came to...

(This is a small story about how we came up with our name for my older son) my husband is italian and im jewish. WhatI was brough tup to do is name the child after a deceased relative. We also agreed before we got married it would be named after my garndfather. My grandfather was ralph and hubby didnt want that for whatever reason. I was also looking into Raphael. which is a turn on the name but the same name. It made dh think of the ninja turtles. Chat Icon so we were debating for a long tiem and we both dont like nicknames so one day we were in the obs office and the receptionist gave us a really nice name, which we liked and stuck with. Sounds very ethinic when you say it and its funny cause when they came in at the hospital for his name I totally spelled it wrong. but I figured when he turns 18 or 21 he can change it if he wants. Nobody was in the hospital with me when they came in and the nurse wanted a name right away . Which they can NOT do Chat Icon I was also under alot of medication with him. Had a reaction to something and then caught an ammonia on top of it.

For my second one we went the easiest route not happy with it but agreed since hubby agreed for the first. My hubby is Jr. so my son is the third. but he likes it cause its llike his dads

We broke it. DH is Greek and that is what they do but there was no way in hell I was going to name my children after his parents. Although, he tried to change my mind till the very end literally as I was in the recovery room he asked me if I was sure I wouldn't reconsider and I told him that if he ever wanted more children he better quit while he was ahead. I don't understand why people would name there children ugly names just to please someone else. What about the poor kid with the ugly name that is going to get made fun of growing up? My In-Laws have horrid names and it plain out won't happen.

Yes it is standard Italian Tradition but I wasn't sure how many Italians we had on the boards Chat Icon

All of DH's cousins have the same name it is soooooooo annoying!!! In my bridal party we had 3 NICKS!!!! Its all the same name over and over and over.
Thats another thing if my BIL & SIL follow tradition ( I am 99.9 % sure they will) My son will have male cousins with the same name as him.

Even though I HATE her name I am willing to use it as a middle name. Mind you it does not "go" with anything and makes everything sound weird but I am willing to do that much. I just know when the time comes my MIL is going to flip out. I know most people say cross that bridge when you come to it... well those people dont know my MIL Chat Icon

absolutely NOT. But my father isn't Italian and does not expect to have any grandchildren named after him. We also don't have a good relationship right now so he DEFINITELY would never expect it.

Re: Did anyone Break Tradition when it came to...

Luckily neither of our families have traditions when it comes to naming children, so DH and I have picked a name that we want with no influence from anybody for our baby boy. Chat Icon

Re: Did anyone Break Tradition when it came to...

My sister did her first child is named after her husband& father in law which is william and i tell ya she does not get along with him. and her daughter Kaitlyn is name for my grandmother even though my nanny my mom's mom was katherina she just did it a little different but the nickname is still the same we call her katie my niece just like everyone called my grandmother.

now when i have a baby my husband said he does not want a baby named after him so what i am going to do is Joesph Robert i am going to use his name as a middle name and if I have a daughter I am naming her after my sister Victoria Rose.

I like Seraphina. Sera is a version of is, but you could go with Sara or Serena & tell MIL that it is a variation of her name ( even though they have different meanings & origins)

my husband was named after his father (same first name...different last name) we moved it to the middle name position

I has the same initials as my father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-grandfather (well not anymore since I change my name to DH's), but I will most likely not name any child with those initials, unless it happens to be that I like a name and it works out.

Well the thing Is I am actually WILLING to use Serafina as the middle name. It dosent "go" with any of the first names I like but still I don't mind.

The whole point is that I know she is going to be really hurt/annoyed/upset that Serafina is not the baby's first name.

Re: Did anyone Break Tradition when it came to...

So funny you brought this up Maxine ..

I am Italian, Dh is Greek and its a tradition in both those cultures to name children after people..

Luckily those who have gone before us (namely DH's cousins and brothers, my brother, etc) have either broken tradition or taken up all the names - so by the time we finally get around to having our children, I am NOT following the lead.

There are like a kazillion Anthonys, Peters, Williams etc in DH's family - they ALL had boys - I am going to come up with a nice new original name for our son someday and start our own tradition Chat Icon

That said - I know that old school Italian families are STICKLERS for this type of stuff, so I do NOT envy your position Chat IconChat Icon

My father's family is Italian (Sicilian) and no one did that. Maybe it's regional or maybe they just gave it up when they came to this country.

A woman I work with married into an Italian family and followed this tradition. She named one of her daughters "Joanna" as a variation of "Johanna"-- and found out later that the relative was insulted that the exact name wasn't used.

I also read that the Irish tradition is to name the boys after the husband's family and the girls after the wife's.

Anyway--this is sticky. And I wish you luck in dealing with your MIL Chat Icon

Re: Did anyone Break Tradition when it came to...

Both of my parents are from Sicily - and it was a big tradition that my parents carried over here to name their kids after their parents. Me, my sis and brother are the only cousins named after our grandparents - out of all the cousins!

First born was traditionally always named after the father's parents, so I was named after my father's mom.

My sis was named after my mother's mom and my brother after my dad's dad.

My parents are in the "90s" now and have realized that no one is going along with this tradition anymore, NOT even in Sicily! So neither my parents or inlaws except me and DH to name them after them.

But - I don't think that if you do it for a first child that its mandatory to do it for the second.
Me and DH love a bunch of names and I almost definitely don't think they will be named after our parents - even though we adore them greatly.
