Desperate for Advice on Jordan's Sleep Schedule/Patterns (long)

We are up here in NY visiting. Of course, everyone and their mother wants to see the baby. He has been seeing a zillion different people every day, going from one place to the next, and is VERY over-stimulated. He is not a good napper to begin with but that's been completely shot now. Also, his bedtime has not been consistent, which I'm really not happy about.

For about the past week and a half he's actually been sleeping through the night!! Yay!! He was a champ on the plane - never woke up, slept through car ride, we kept him in car seat, slept through the night.

Our first night here, he was so tired after seeing so many people during the day, he fell asleep the second I put the bedtime bottle into his mouth and I had to dream feed him - I could only get two oz in him and I knew he'd wake up hungry overnight and he did - at 4:45 am, but still - he had slept 10 hours on 2 oz!!!

The past two nights is what's killing me - he's been up on and off between 1-4 am both nightsChat Icon I am exhausted, he's exhausted. I know he would eat and prob go right back to sleep but I've refused to give him a bottle because I don't want him to fall into this middle of the night bottle again although it definitely would have been easier for all of us these past two nights! Last night was really bad and I ended up letting him sleep in my arms in bed, which I NEVER do, but every time I put him down he woke right back up! Needless to say, I got no sleep!

So, IDK what to do at this point. I was hoping that the first night of 1-4 am was a fluke, but it happened again last night. Like I said, scared giving him a bottle will create this monster. I can't function like this for the next 6 nights up here nor do I want this happening when we get back to Florida.

Can anyone give advice, hints, suggestions? Will giving him a bottle in the middle of the night stop him from sleeping through the night again?

Please give me some advice!

Thank you!

We had a similar issue when we went to DW last month. DS started to wake up multiple times a night. He was only waking up once a night prior to the trip. The first two days were fine. After that, I guess he was over stimulated and was waking up a lot. It only lasted 2 days after we got home. He was passing out by 7-8pm most nights, but was getting up 2-3 times. DS should get back to his normal routine when you get back home...

I'd give him a bottle and fill him up... he'd probably go right back till morning.

Sienna STTN very early on but almost every month there would be 3 days straight of waking at 3/4/5am. I figured it was growth spurts so I would always feed her at that time and she'd go right back. She never got into the habit of eating at that time and after that 3 days she'd STTN again no problem.

I did that until about 7 months old... and for the last month or so we've just been rocking her back to sleep if she gets up randomly since I know she doesn't need to eat.

Were you feeding him or just trying to get him back to sleep? HOW were you getting him back to sleep?Chat Icon

Jess - how did you know she didn't need to eat (this last month) vs when she did need to eat in the middle of the night? I feel like he wants to (by the way he sucks on the pacifier and then spits it out) but again, scared to create a new, bad habit.

I would give him a bottle, maybe you don't need to give him as much as he eats at a regular feeding though.

DS used to sleep through the night and then started getting up. I tried not to feed him at first and then he was just up most of the night. Like you, I spent soem time sleeping with him in my arms.

DH took over the middle of the night, gave him a small bottle and he went right back to sleep for the rest of the night.

Sometimes he does wake up after the bottle and I rock him. I can tell he needs to just be rocked when he's asleep on me as soon as I take him out of his crib.

I'd give him a bottle. He might be going through a growth spurt. Just b/c he STTN for several days doesn't mean he'll do it from now on. He may still need to eat at night. DS was EBF, but he still woke up to eat until he was 7 months old. I learned that once you think you've figured out DC's sleep patterns, it completely changes. Chat Icon

Indeed - babies are quite unpredictable, especially at night.

How old is your DS? My DD is 6 months and my ped just told me that if she wakes at night, don't feed her (she has been STTN for months now) that she doesn't need it. She's 20 lbs now, BTW. However, if your DS is younger, I would feed him. When we took DD on vacation at 4 months she woke up one or two nights in the middle of the night and I fed her. I knew she didn't really "need" to eat, but it helped to soothe her in an unfamiliar location.

I don't think she really needed to eat in the middle of the night once she started STTN but she would go back to sleep so easily when I did feed her. Plus I read that it could be growth spurts that young so I figured she could be waking bc of hunger. Once she hit 6/7 months we decided to just rock her back to sleep when she woke up so we wouldn't create a habit.

Since Jordan is so young I wouldn't worry about creating bad habits yet.

ITA with this--babies are also very sensitive to a chance in atmosphere, so that's probably contributing to his waking in the middle of the night.

I'd say, based on what we went through with DD when she was younger, feed him when he wakes and try rocking him back to sleep. You can start fresh when you get back home, and you'll find that it probably won't take as long to get back into your regular routine as you might think Chat Icon
