I just got this sent home from my son's school.

The mystery box. There are three clues and the kids have to guess what's in the box.

maybe you can tie it up at the end and have them draw what they would put in the mystery box. You can give them blank paper that has "I would put ____________ in my mystery box" and help them fill in the blank.

I don't know much about early childhood... but what about something on the seasons? You can have kids get up and act out the sun shining.. the leaves falling.. flowers growing..a blizzard .. they can be creative Chat Icon

Just a thought.. again, preschool is sooo out of my zone since I teach 7th grade Chat Icon

Good luck!!!

Re: Demo lesson ideas? (for a special needs preschool)

i'm a speech therapist at a school, so i deal with a lot of language delayed students. i don't have any preschoolers, but do have some kindergarteners/1st graders.

last yera i did something similar to the "mystery box"...
1)first, i talked about different attributes- on the chalkboard, write "color", "shape" "size" "what does it do?"

2) then i did some examples- "ok! heres a picture of an apple. what color is an apple? what shape is an apple? what do we do with an apple?" that kind of thing. if they don't seem to know what "shape" means, or what "size" means, you can give them choices "ok- is an apple a circle or a square?", " is an apple something we wear, or something we eat?" "is an apple big or small?"-- break it down a little more for them.

3)next, i made it a guessing game. i did this right after christmas, so i did " guess what i got for christmas!" I had a colorful christmas gift bag. Ii would pull out a picture, not show the kids and give them clues and see if they could guess what it was. with halloween coming up, you could do something like "guess whats in my halloween bucket" ( use one of those plastic pumpkin buckets).

4)after you do a few, you could have the kids come up and take turns picking a picture and giving the other kids clues (you'll need to help them with this, but thats why you wrote "color" shape" "size" "what does it do?" on the board Chat Icon

check for food allergies, but i also did a little lesson on cooking- you can find a story where a character cooks with another character or something, then talked about some cooking vocab like " measuring cup", "bowl" "spoon".... then have them use those objects to follow a recipe and make a snack ( i did one with some raisins, cheerios, sugar and cinnamin and made lieka trail mix type thing) I let the kids measure the ingredients and mix it.

i also did a similar thing to work on processing and following directions- we made a snack that was instant vanilla pudding with strawberries and bananas cut up in it. i wrote out the directions ahead of time, then read the directions one at a time to the kids so they could listen/follow them and make their snack Chat Icon

hope this helps!

Re: Demo lesson ideas? (for a special needs preschool)

thanks again for the feedback guys.

Ive decided (and still in process of writing the lesson plan)
to do MANNERs.

this one book DO UNTO OTTERS (and it's about otters, the animals) but I thought parents would flip if their child has speech issues and Im teaching them "Do unto otterS" (the concept is great, the book is ADORABLE Chat Icon ) so I stayed on the same theme and found another book on manners.
Cookies: Bite Size Life Lessons

and it talks about respect, fair, courageous, patient, etc. (some are bigger words that I wont use for the activity: pessi/optimist) but many are great.

Now I need a little more help/feedback.

Im planning to

*Read the book, talk about manners and some of the words in the book.

*then have a big bowl of "cookies" (paper cutouts) and just to kill time I may have them "fish" for the cookies, if I have time to make the magnet/paperclip fishing idea.
and on the back of each cookies will be one of the words.
and Im thinking I can have them act out that word, but I know preschool needs a bit more direction, right?
should I give them a scenario and say "someone offers you a drink that you dont like, whats the RESPECTFUL thing to say"
i dont want to just say "give me an example of respect" and leave it so open ended, they may be nervous of being on the spot, and blank out, no ?

and then as a final/closure activity, I was going to have them DRAW a situation where they showed manners.

should I PRE PRINT a page that says
I LEARNED A BITE-SIZE LESSON TODAY
or
ONE TIME THAT I SHOWED MY MANNERS WAS : (their drawing below)

and they can only write the word at the bottom, for example
RESPECT, TRUST...

am I going off track ? someone help reel me in Chat Icon

or should I make BIG COOKIES (construction paper) and make them draw on the opposite side / paste white on the opposite side) and we can do above (bite size lesson: respect)...
ahhh, i got the ideas, but cant zero in here.... im getting this done tonite so any feedback would be awesome.

should I refer to this as manners or character ed ?
thanks agian Chat Icon
