Gail do they have carpeting? I am pretty sure that in NYC, 80% of open walking space must be covered either by carpeting or area rugs. I could be wrong, but it may be worth checking out.

if they do, it must be real thin. the son is running back and forth. dh is sleeping through it. once i hear the noise, i'm up.

 UUUUUGGHHHH.
I used to live upstairs in our 1st apartment. I think we pizzed off the people downstairs once..But, they pizzed us off every AM...Including Sat. & Sunday.
I'm tallking radio blasting at 7:30AM until way after midnight, Vacuum going EVERY AM before 8AM.
UUUGGHHHHHH I hated them!

dh had to go up to them right after they moved in about 10:30pm during the week. he said, i don't mean to be rude but my wife needs to be up at 5am for work. they were moving stuff around. they apologized. but who does stuff that late during the week

I feel your pain we use to live in a apartment downstairs and we had people, blast their music, kids running, dog barking, I dont think people have common sense and just dont respect other's. maybe confront them again and see what happens.
