I'm pretty quiet and don't discuss politics unless surrounded by those of a similar mindset. Thankfully, MOST of my family is on the same page.

But I have colleagues who think trump is doing fabulous, that the news networks are so biased, that he's our president and it's disgusting that so many news organizations don't respect the fact that he got elected fair and square. That these democrats and liberals are out of their 'effing' minds, that they put up with obama for 8 years, etc, etc, etc.

How do you deal?

I don’t. I don’t engage and I don’t attempt to further communicate about it anymore. It depends who it is, but I usually cut them out of my life for the most part.

I've realized there is no point in trying to talk to them about it. No facts or reasoning will make them think differently. I just try not to bring it up.

I have a few people on facebook who drive me up the wall with their pro-Trump/anti-liberal posts. I just don't understand how they think he's "finally a president who cares about the people." Unless by "the people" they mean himself? When I see those people in real life, I just pray that they don't bring it up, because there is only so long I can hold back.

I also think there is some kind of comprehension problem with a lot of his unwavering supporters. Like they're always making points/arguments about why he's right, but they totally miss the actual problem.

For example with his "shithole countries" comment, they're all arguing that some countries are shitholes. That's great, but that's not the point. What (most) people were upset about, is that you're saying people from these countries shouldn't be allowed into the US, because where they're from determines their value as a person.

Another example, the grab them by the p*ssy comment. I see his supporters arguing about the language used. "Oh liberals are upset about Trump saying p*ssy, but they love Beyonce when she dresses like this (with suggestive Beyonce (or whoever) photo attached) While the language adds to the shock value, that's not what (most) people are upset about. He can say p*ssy all day if he wants, the problem is that he's bragging about sexually assaulting women.

That's what really drives me up the wall - the arguments that totally miss the point. If you want to have a policy discussion, fine I'd be open to that, but most of his supporters (or at least the ones I see) don't. They want to talk about how what he said isn't that bad, but they totally miss the point about why it is bad, and then they have inane ideas about what he stands for, e.g., he's finally standing up for the people/military/police/our country.

I don't deal with them. If a conversation breaks out in front of me, I keep my mouth shut or walk away. If I see something on FB, I ignore it. There's nothing I can say that will sway anyone's mind b/c they listen to the lies told by Cheetio and Fox News.

I briefly said something with the govt shutdown (b/c my friend posted that she's annoyed that her husband who woks on base and their family will lose money b/c stupid Dems are more concerned about protecting illegal rights). I responded that all the branches are controlled by Republicans and maybe she should turn her anger toward them. That resulting in many people jumping on my simple reply and her posting "facts" about DACA. I knew what was going to happen so I quickly unfollowed the post after I made my remark and ignored everything they said b/c I knew their "facts" were going to be wrong.

I dont deal with them either. But as much as I prefer surrounding myself with like minded folks, cutting them off isnt the best approach. It makes us non-supporters look bad and hypocritical. No one is a bad person because they voted one way just like no one is bad for being a Dreamer or LGBTQ!

I agree. Unfortunately most of my close friends are supporters. We just don't talk politics.

I've only cut one person out and that's because at a party in her house she and her sister called me out and tried getting me to debate with them. I was in complete disbelief!

I try not to engage, but FIL is an instigator. He's still hung up on the election and calls anyone who is anti-trump "Sore Losers" and libt***s, which I find so offensive. My inlaws have made it known that I embarrass them. It is putting a serious strain on our relationship. They sound so ignorant when they speak, I cringe.

What??? That's terrible!

But it brings me back to another question I have asked before.

What's so bad about being liberal?

Listen, I'm not for giving every immigrant a free ride nor am I of the mindset that welfare should be a full time career. But...liberals brought forth a lot of opportunities and I just don't get why it's so terrible!

Like I said it depends who it is that I cut out. I cut a lot of people off my FB because they voted for him. If I had a close family member that supported him, I’m not sure what I’d do as I don’t have that.

And, I don’t think it’s hypocritical. I think there is a big difference between hate speech and what liberals do. BIG.

I just don't discuss it anymore, I find that it's a waste of time. I also don't believe in cutting people out of my life because they voted the way they voted. I don't understand it but surrounding myself in a echo chamber does nothing for me either. It would be hypocritical of me to cut folks out, Lol what do Jesus do?

Seriously though I just don't bring it up or continue the conversation if it does get brought up by someone.

Work buddy, we ignore his comments, rapidly move the conversation to a different topic.

He says inflammatory things just to get a rise out of us, so we don't let that happen. Chat Icon
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, I just have issue when someone is trying to shove theirs down my throat. When I have enough of him, I distance myself.

Opinions are like azzholes, everyone has one.

I can relate to this.

I hate when anyone brings up politics in front of my MIL. Last night my DH mentioned my mom went to the Women's March that was local to her. First, MIL had no idea what the Women's March was, and then when he explained it, she said she doesn't understand why everyone had to whine about Trump, that there is another election in 4 years and she's so sick of people complaining. She can't even watch football anymore because she couldn't take the protests.

So basically no one should exercise their 1st amendment rights, and they should just sit around and wait for the next election.

She also gets mad at her SIL all the time for posting liberal stuff on facebook, and she insists that she just does it for attention. After the election, her SIL pulled me aside and was like thank god you joined the family. It's nice to have another liberal.

MIL knows DH and I don't agree with her, but to talk to her about it is pointless. I try to just ignore it.

I really try not to talk about it because NOTHING will change their minds and it just leaves me pissed off. Just today, I had a very close family member say "Oh, he's gonna be around for all 8 years. He's great, blah blah blah." I said something like "as a US citizen, I am completely and totally humiliated by him. He's the biggest a$shole around, he's done nothing beneficial, she's somehow brainwashed, etc. etc." She says... "I LOVE him. He says everything I'm thinking." At that point, I literally started to sweat and said, "We need to stop talking about this. I'm sweating and losing respect for you by the second." Chat Icon Chat Icon I just don't get it. At all. Howwwww is it possible for anyone to respect this doucher?!

They think that liberal is as bad as being African-American. Yep. They're racist.

And the fact is, they know that I am middle-of-the-road and vote with the issues. They know I'm not registered to either party. However, just because I am anti-Trump, I must be a liberal, a Hillary supporter, a sore-loser, and an Obama lover. Chat Icon
So let me get this straight, we're still talking about the election, and you still think Trump is a Republican. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Omg this drives me INSANE. A president's term unless re-elected is 4 years. FOUR. Not EIGHT. He has only been elected for FOUR years.

Well, to be fair, statistically most presidents stay around for 8 years. I know— I’m shuddering, too. At this point I’m looking forward to Nov 2018 to, hopefully, get Congress changed over.

Actually, a lot of times a president who follows a 2 term president is a 1 term one...it sounds dumb, but look in recent years.

Statistically, 21 of the 45 POTUSs were elected to a 2nd term. It seems like it's very common because we had a lot of 2 term presidents in recent history.

Well, good point. But how does that work with death/assignations in the early days until Kennedy?
