DD has her first cold at 5 months- why do I feel crazy?

She is congested with a runny nose- is coughing sporadically. Went to dr. after we called them- they wanted to check her ears for signs of infection. She is taking her bottle but taking a lot of breaks from drinking to breathe since she is congested. We are using saline drops, the cool air mist humidifier, and aspirating her nose as needed. She is pleasant for the most part, but seems like she is restless and doesn't know what to do with herself.

I know it is "just a cold" but I don't feel right about dragging her out in the cold to go to dinner with friends or to a NYE party. Why do I feel like I am crazy for feeling this way? I feel like she will be uncomfortable out of her element (especially since this is the first time she is sick) and like it will just not be a great time being out socializing while she is under the weather. I feel like I am being treated like a weirdo for wanting to cancel plans to go out because of "just a cold".

Please be honest with me- am I being an unreasonable, over-protective new mom with a first time sick child?

I know everyone has their own way of handling things-- but if Sasha was sick, I would probably not bring her out. I'd rather not disrupt her routine and comfort to ensure she gets a good night's sleep-- but, i am VERY protective of her night sleep, because she doesn't nap so well.

If she seems in good spriits otherwise-- I would try it. If she is playful and seems to want to get out-- then go. Just be prepared to head home if she becomes unhappy.

That is the part that is making me not want to go out- we would be either going to a restaurant for dinner or to a party an hour away.Chat Icon

When my kids have colds we go about life as usual unless they have a fever or are just totally miserable.

I dont think so but I would be an over-protective new mom with a first time sick child! I would probably be more comfortable staying home but that is my comfort level...and I guess on the plans too

i'm generally very laid back about stuff like that and try to just go on with our normal routine, BUT when DD had her first cold like that last month- it was the same in every way as you described, really bad.... i really just tried to stay home with her as much as possible. Both for her comfort and mine. Maybe b/c it was her 'first'... but i felt like i needed the security of my own home, etc... in case she got any worse. Honestly, adding that to the fact that it's also a holiday AND the roads are snowy/crappy (i hate being on the roads on new years to start with), and you'd be an hour away... i think i'd really be most comfortable just staying in for the night. I think if you were going locally I would maybe go out for an hour or so - but since it would be an hour away there is no way I would go.

It's hard when they feel so miserable, and ultimately you will not end up having fun because you will be dealing with a sick child.

Hope she's better soon!
