They say if you're under 35 TTC for 1 year after that go check over 35 6 months then go see a specialist. Good Luck! I think statisticallyl a "fertile" couple only has a 25% chance of conceiving every month. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: curious? how long ttc before worrying

I am 36. We TTC'd for 6 months. It was never suggested that I see a specialist at this point. We went back on the very day that marked 6 months. DH was prescribed an SA and I was given an appointment to come back for a sonogram, bloodwork and other tests. We are not going to a specialist until my GYN has exhausted every effort to get us PG within the confines of his office. We will more than likely be doing an AIH (Artificial Insemination by Husband) which he can do. Surely, it isnt definite and there are other procedures that will more than likely get us PG faster, but they are more invasive, time consuming, costly and emotionally draining. I dont know how many times AIH or other procedures are done, but I will find out on Wednesday - thats when I go back.

ETA:
To address your original question. I think to start to "worry" would depend on many factors. Every person is different and has different circumstances. Your concerns are real. If talking to us helps, we are here for you.

Re: curious? how long ttc before worrying

I think it also depends on how hard you tried. We just winged it for quite a while with no real attention to my cycle and without worrying about whether we missed the best days, etc. Even though I am older, 6 months did not seem like enough time. It would have been enough if we were more attentive to my cycle. I was more comfortable the way we did it, and I needed to ease into the idea of TTC. If I were younger, I would have waited for more than a year. Now, I hope to see an RE sometime in Feb. That will be after about 5 cycles of really trying, plus about 5 cycles of just not using BC.

i am 30. i told my ob/gyn around the time of my wedding that we might start casually trying. she said if i wasn't pregnant in 6 months, give a call for an appointment. we haven't started though, which is why i remain a mere lurker on this board Chat Icon

Re: curious? how long ttc before worrying

I agree with Goldi that when to worry can depend on lots of factors.

For instance: DH and only starting actively trying in October. However it was very clear something was not right when AF decided to take a vacation and not because of a BFP either. When I hit CD 47 I made an appointment with my GYN and we found there was a problem.

i believe that the official "definition" of infertility is 1 year of actively trying (or maybe 12 cycles?Chat Icon ). working out the statistics also supports the idea that most, but not all, of fertile couples will conceive within a year (yes, i have done it, and yes, i need to get a life Chat Icon Chat Icon). but i'm sort of hoping that my doc will do a little preliminary testing at 6 months... i'm hoping for at least a sperm analysis...

That is so cool that you worked out the stats!!! I just looked online and found that a definition of infertility can be set my insurance companies, the state (when it regulates IF coverage), ACOG, National Infertility Association, etc. From one website:

Infertility is diagnosed, according to the National Infertility Association (NIA), when a couple actively tries to conceive a child for a year without success. This definition varies for women in their late 30's or early 40's or women with known medical conditions. For instance, women with multiple miscarriages are considered to have an infertility problem. A healthy, young couple in their 20's has a 20 percent chance of conceiving each month, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). The odds decline the older a couple gets

Re: curious? how long ttc before worrying

Here's what I was told by my OB/GYN... If under 35, after one year of not conceiving they start testing. If over 35, they will start testing at 6 months.

I start testing on Monday. I am 32.
