Crocheting vs Knitting

Whats the difference, can you do more with one? Does the finished product look different? Is one easier to pick up than the other?

Im interested in learning.

My grandmother used to crochet (I think), god rest her soul, and I have some beautiful baby things from her from when I was little and a gorgeous blanket that she made me when I was born that I still use to this day. Id like to take one up. Just not sure which.

Thanks for any advice!

Re: Crocheting vs Knitting

I've found crocheting much easier to learn than knitting. I still haven't figured out knitting! Chat Icon

I actually learned by watching you tube videos. I had bought a book, but the instructions and pictures of the stitches didn't make sense to me. I needed to see someone's hands actually make the stitches.

Crocheting uses a single hook, Knitting uses 2 needles.

The end result does look different.

thanks for the feedback. If you dont mind me asking, how long did it take to really get it and be able to make something half decent?

I agree that crocheting is easier than knitting. My mom taught me when I was @ 10. I have tried several times to teach myself to knit, I've had people show me etc. I can do the very basic stitch (a knit stitch or a purl stitch), but no matter how hard I try I can't combine them to make things like blankets, hats, baby booties etc (all things I can crochet).

Re: Crocheting vs Knitting

i do both.

my mother taught me how to crochet when i was 7. i taught myself how to knit at 27, with the use of the internet (before youtube).

they are very different, as stated above. one uses a hook, the other uses two needles. the final product is also very different. knit will almost always be a thinner fabric because crochet uses more yarn per stitch.

depending on what you want to make, each has it's benefits. i have only knit one blanket, and i don't think i'll ever do that again. i prefer crochet for blankets/afghans.

i mostly prefer knitting because i like the variety it gives me.

if you want to get started but aren't sure about investing the money, especially since you might want to start with one and then try the other... FM me with your mailing address. i'll send you a relatively inexpensive skein of yarn and a pair of knitting needles.

i have a nasty habit of buying knitting/crocheting items at yardsales/freecycle, so that i can give them away to anyone thinking of picking up the craft.

i can't swear that i have a crochet hook, but i know i have extra needles... and i have a room full of yarn Chat Icon

i'd be happy to send it your way.

Re: Crocheting vs Knitting

I learned to crochet when I was 8. However, I couln't read a pattern up until 2 years ago. I find it easier, I only recently taught myself the basics of knitting.

Two of the best books I've found are both by the same woman one is for crochet and one knitting. They are the "Stitch and B*tch" series.

Hope that helps!

Glad it's not just me Chat Icon

I can do a single chain, my nana taught me to crochet as a child and I couldn't do it properly. Every time I turned a row my piece got smaller and smaller... what were supposed to be squares turned into more like parallelograms or triangles Chat Icon
I have a full set of hooks I may try it again now that YouTube is around

Knitting came easier to me. I was taught by a woman when I was in my late teens and it just clicked for me.

I envy those who can do both.

my coworker is an awesome knitter and one of her sweaters is being featured in the STITCH AND B*TCH SERIES!

She taught me a basic stitch when we knitted a blanket for another coworker. I dont think i want to knit ever again...LOL.

LOL, I know....Greg just told me you were taking it up also. He was like to check your LIF post, Kim wants to learn too.

I did take a knitting class once, at a place literally across the street from my house and it was horribly....Im thinking of trying crocheting, LOL.

Im so torn though, bc the knitted stuff seems SO much cuter~

My co-worker taught me to crochet and I found it pretty simple. I watched MIL knit and had no idea what she was doing! I find crocheting much easier!

Re: Crocheting vs Knitting

I love knitting. I find it much easier than crochet. I think it depends what you were taught at a younger age with mom or grandma.

I can only do basic crochet. I would love to be able to do elaborate stuff though. I have those cute crochet bag patterns.
