Cooking Brown Rice

My husband bought some brown rice from trader joes..I followed the recipe, which was to cook on low for 45 minutes or until the water was obsorbed...the problem is that the water obsorbed way before the 45 minutes, and the rice was undercooked...Any advice on cooking rice? Should i just add more water next time?

Re: Cooking Brown Rice

You really need to cook it on a low low temp. I have an electric stove and usually only put the temp up to one or two notches.
This is what I do.
1. Add water, rice, and a bit of butter to a pot on medium high.
2. Once the water starts to boil, stir the rice a bit, put the temp down to low and cover for 45 minutes.

I have recently started buying the frozen brown rice from trader joes, because it only takes 3 minutes in the microwave.

Ok, thanks...maybe next time i'll try putting it on the lowest setting (i have a gas oven). I think i had it a little above the lowest setting.

ITA and I always add a little bit more water, like 1/4 cup

Brown rice tends to be a little harder so you need to add a little more water and definitely cook on low. I use chicken stock (low sodium or salt free) instead of water because I don't like the taste of plain brown rice.

Re: Cooking Brown Rice

2-1/2 cups water to 1 cup brown rice. Add a tbs oil or butter
Bring water & oil to a boil, stir in rice, bring to a boil then bring it down really really low. Cook for 40 minutes then let it sit for 5.

It 'usually' works - I say usually, because SOMETIMES it doesn't and I never know why.
