Competition Auto Group - Toyota. Buyer beware!! Update below

DH and I purchased a 2015 Corolla back in mid November from Competition Toyota in Middle Island. For the past month, it started giving us problems. First time, DH was driving to work and the car completely stalled out while he was driving. It ended up restarting and he brought it to the service department, who had it for about 4 days, and supposedly they reset some things but couldn't replicate the problem. Last Tuesday, the car completely stalled again while DH was pulling out of the driveway. He had to call Toyota roadside assistance who towed it back to the service department. We contacted Toyota customer service bc we are now concerned that this relatively brand new car has been having multiple issues. We finally heard back from the service department and it seems as if the fuse area in the engine (I think? I don't know much about cars lol) was completely rusted and corroded. We were told his is a major repair and we probably wouldn't get our car back until the middle of this week.

DH called just for a status update and when the service department finally called him back, they accused him of driving through a puddle and getting under the hood wet. Chat Icon

Today they called him and they can't find the keys to the car to work on it. Chat Icon Chat Icon

They've basically been a nightmare to deal with so if you're planning on purchasing a vehicle from not only competition Toyota but any of the competition dealers, buyer beware!

I'm extremely disappointed because we are a Toyota family. My Prius' lease is up in January and I was planning on getting another but will now be looking for a different vehicle.

Riverhead Toyota's service department has been good whenever we have had an issue. We are on our second Prius. Nice cars. Gets 53 miles per gallon :)

I love my Prius! It's my second one and I really want another one when my lease is up but I'm totally turned off by Toyota right now.

I've been getting 51mpg!

Look up the lemon law in Ny if your car has had the same repair multiple times. As for them loosing the key, I would tell them to rekey for free as it is their fault. You may need an attorney to help you to get them to give you a new car.

I bought my first Prius from Riverhead in 2008 and my second from competition in 2011. I could not stand dealing with them for service so I went back to Riverhead. It's very likely I will buy another Prius ( mine has 88,000 miles now) but it won't be from competition!

We're definitely looking into it! However, they're claiming that it's not the same repair because the first time he was driving on a road when it stalled and the second time, he was pulling out of the driveway. Chat Icon Chat Icon

You should look for an attorney who can assist you. Call the bar association if you need a referral.

The law is 4 repair attempts or 30 days down within 18,000 miles or 2 years. So, unfortunately you don't qualify yet. Has Toyota customer service tried to help? I'll send you a PM with some ideas when I get a chance. DH works for a luxury car manufacturer and knowledgeable about this stuff.

DH has a case manager he's dealing with over at Corporate CS. They supposedly sent a field engineer to the dealer to see what is going on. We'll see what happens next lol.

My parents told me to always deal with corporate when you have a problem with a dealership. Corporate tries to crackdown on poor service.

I worked in a dealership for 4 years.. Call Toyota Headquarters and never speak with anybody at the dealership other than the manager.. Also tell them you will make a complaint with the BBB, and if they don't help you actually do it.

I have used that dealership for 15 years and never ever had a problem! Good luck and I would continue to speak with corporate.

Sounds like possible lemon law issue. There's a podcast I listen to alot. Lehto's Law. He's a lawyer in Michigan who practices comsumer protection and lemon law. Obviously, he's most knowledgeable about Michigan but he gives a lot of good general pointers about how to deal with dealers in a potential lemon law situation. One thing he talks about is that the auto manufacturers are reluctant to replace a lemon car and much of the time you end up going to court. I'd listen to a few of his podcasts for ideas. Some of what he says is common sense (i.e. keep a copy of everything, etc). But other's are things I hadn't thought of.

Competition Auto Group - Toyota. Buyer beware!!

I just wanted to update.

We got back our car yesterday afternoon after it was being serviced for 10 days. 24 hours later, we went to head out, and it will not start again. Back it goes. We're on the 3rd time.

Once again competition is being a nightmare to deal with. We had to go through Toyota corporate just so we can get a loaner car tomorrow since they refused to give us one til Monday since the service department is closed tomorrow even though the dealership is open. Corporate was able to get them to leave keys to a loaner for us to get tomorrow. We tried going through another dealer/service department but we're told that since competition knows what's going on, we need to deal with them. DH is fuming. I'm irate. 33 weeks pregnant with a 16 month old. We need a reliable car. We're gathering every thing we need to file under the lemon law. This is just so frustrating.
