Comparison of religious beliefs
I was raised Catholic but over the past few years have become lapsed.....I am interested in finding out about the other Christian denomination beliefs...such as Presbyterian, Lutheran, Methodist...does anyone know where I can (online or a book) read up on the differences? Kind of like a comparison chart?

Re: Comparison of religious beliefs
I am Methodist and converted about 5 years ago. I like the congregation I am part of. I have learned a lot form the bible and they offer Sunday school for my daughter and have bible study for the adults.

Instead of looking into a new religion, why not look to get back in to your own religion?

Re: Comparison of religious beliefs
I don't think people just decide to change but it's something that happens gradually. It happened w/ me during visiting the church I'm in now.

I agree. Just because you are riased a certain way does not mean that you are limited to that one thing your whole life.
Here are some sites.....not sure how good they are though, but it could be a good starting point to gather some info.link 1
link 2
link 3
link 4 this last one is an essay, but has resources as links in the page.
Good Luck

Re: Comparison of religious beliefs
Just wanted to state that of course everyone is entitled to examine their spirituality and look high and low for something that is satisfying.
BUT---> A part of organized religion(s) is to help guide others when they start to feel like they are straying from their religion too. This is why we have Godparents, isn't it?

IMO Some people may no longer be comfortable with the dogmatic ways of a certain church or religion. In my case I don't believe in "confessions" and therefore I would have problems with certain denominations.

Re: Comparison of religious beliefs
WOW. People need to back off. If you would like to explore more religions than good for you!! No one should be forced to go back to a religion they are lapsing from. Plus, that religion worked for your parents and thats how they wanted to raise you....was never written in stone that you needed to remain with that religion.
Last but not least, God parents are there for spiritual guidance up until you become an adult...then their position ends.

Why would you look into a religion given to you?
We are born into whatever religion our parents are...then we either accept it based on faith and feel it is "right" for us, or we look to find a faith that is.

Just meant maybe she might consider talking to someone about it. Be it a priest (or a rabbi if she was Jewish) or any other person who might help re-establish a faith she once had. If not then, move on.
It was just a suggestion. I really didn't expect to have everyone jump down my throat.

Re: Comparison of religious beliefs
I think it was a case of misinterpretation from your post Kelly. I don't think anyone meant to jump down your throat.
I think your intent was to say, make sure you check out what you currently have before you go looking somewhere else. (the Wizard of Oz principle - there's no place like home)
But I agree with some of the other posters, that I think most people should (and don't) take the time to check out ALL religions before settling on the one that was given to them when they were born.
Just like we start to choose our own clothes and friends and music, I think we should be encouraged to choose our own religion when we are young as well.
But we are mostly given it and stick with it and never explore other religions and then remained biased and misinformed in some cases.

Re: Comparison of religious beliefs
If you came from a Christian background, which I think you mentioned in an earlier post, then I would also recommend looking at some of the feminist theology movements and what they have to say as well..... it does shed a different light on the spirituality of it rather than the traditions and the beliefs as expressed in a male-dominated structure.
BTW, any of the feminine-based or goddess based religions are very much based on spirituality/life force/universal importance.

I will have to dig through my research from when I went to St. Johns....one of my thesis was based on the misinterpretation of the bible, and how it created religion (especialy Roman Catholicism) as a male dominated force that actually represses women in a religious and social way. There are a ton of great writings on it, one being the arguement that has now gone mainstream with the DaVinci code, which is the theory that Mary (mother of Jesus) was a priest for "The Way," and that Mary Magdaline was a priest as well as Jesus's wife & mother to his children.
I have to find some of the names of the key players when I get home to my computer.
ETA: On this link are other links to some good resources..Mary Daly is one of the leaders in this study...
