Commuting to the city question - if you work midtown/UES?

Does anyone take the LIRR to Jamaica and then the E into the city? I'm wondering if this may be a quicker way to get to midtown east (59th/Lex) then going all the way to Penn.

Thanks!

I work at grand central. I hve had to take the E train out to Jamaica when service wasn't running out of penn. I would never voluntarily do it. The E train takes forever.

No. That's my exact commute- train to Penn and then N, Q, R to 59th. Never occurred to me to take the E from Jamaica, it would take forever.

I took the train to hunters point. So easy. Then 7 train to grand central. you would just take the 4/5 1 stop.

Yeah, no way take the E. That would take a really long time. Better off going to Penn first

Couldn't you take the LIRR to Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn and then take the 4 or 5 uptown. Then you're already on the east side.

I agree with the majority - no way to the E train. It's local and slow.

Hunterspoint or Brooklyn could be viable options but only if the train times work out perfectly. I wouldn't change at Jamaica to take those branches. I would just go to Penn. The E comes frequently and it's probably 10 minutes to 53rd and Lex.

I've done this off peak hours to get home from LI (I live in the UES). I would say no freaking way. I have taken the train to Woodside and done the 7 to the N or Q. That's slightly better but not necessary.

Don't even think about going to Atlantic Terminal to catch the 4/5, (I've done this too) it's a much longer unnecessarily out of the way commute.

I go straight to penn and walk over to the NQR.

It's the same amount of time. I've done it. Maybe a few mintues shorter. In some ways it's better than catching the E at penn. You dont have to schlep through Penn, At Penn the platform is insanely crowded and at Jamaica you almost always get a seat.

Thanks for the responses! I've been commuting to Chelsea for a while and I either walk or take the 1 three stops from Penn, but I'm considering a job at 59th/Lex so trying to figure out the quickest route.

Thanks again!

I work at grand central. I take the LIRR to Hunter's Point and then the 7 into grand central. It's very fast and easy. I do have to transfer at Jamaica, but I still find it quicker than taking the subway from Jamaica.

Re: Commuting to the city question - if you work midtown/UES?

I worked at York and 61st for many years and always took the LIRR into Hunterspoint, then the 7 east to Queensboro Plaza and the N/Q/R to 59th at Lex. Sounds like a lot of schlepping - but it worked.

If I had to do your proposed commute, I'd do Hunterspoint to the 7 into the city and the 6 uptown. (That's exactly what I do everyday - except I get off at 51st for my office.)

ETA - to answer your question about taking the E from Jamaica - you can certainly do that. I've done it many times - particularly when there are issues at Penn or between Penn and Jamaica. It's about 20-25 minutes on the E.

LIRR to Penn and E to 59/lex is the fastest way. Taking the LIRR to Jamaica and then E is usually 10-15 mins longer.

LIRR to Atlantic and then 4/5 to 59/Lex is significantly longer.

When I lived on LI and worked on the East Side I took the train to Hunterspoint Avenue and then the 7 to Grand Central - it was so much easier than dealing with Penn (I worked on 42nd so I didn't have to switch subways).

That is my subway stop. it is more like 15-20 minutes from Penn to there but it is manageable. It's how I predominantly travel and I see a number of folks from my train doing the same so I am not the only crazy one. I occasionally go home via Hunterspoint depending on how train schedules work out. It doesn't seem shorter by any means, just an alternative.

Also, the E doesn't stop at 59th/Lex- only the N, Q, R, 4, 5, 6

Also just an FYI on Hunterspoint. I commute via Hunterspoint 2 nights a week and anytime there are issues at Penn...it usually does not impact HP trains.

I've done both...taken the E from Jamaica vs go all the way into Penn. It's pretty close on timing, depending on how close you work to the subway. The good part about going in from Jamaica is you can get a seat on the subway...usually.

I work in Midtown East. When I commuted from Ronkonkoma, I tried to save money by getting off at Jamaica then taking the E. It was quicker but only by a few minutes. Most days in I stood from Jamaica to Manhattan whereas when I took the train to Penn I would sit. Coming home was harsh. I would rarely get a seat on the E or at first on the LIRR in Jamaica.

Absolutely no on the E.

I take the train to hunter point. TKe the 7 to grand central then up on the n for 53 and 6th.

Hunters point is the way to go.
