City recommendation needed: A place for dinner and drinks where we can talk and actually hear each other
I'm meeting a friend in the city for dinner and drinks. Mid-town is the best bet for both of us. I'd like a place where we can sit and talk...

midtown east or west? what type of atmosphere?
Either - doesn't matter as much since I'm going to Penn, he's going to Grand Central.
Atmosphere just needs to be quiet enough where we can talk.
It's a social visit but we've got some "stuff" to talk about.

bummer, though i was kind of thinking they would be loud, they sound like pubs, which are fun but not somewhere you can sit down have a bite to eat and talk. ugh 
is there any chance you can think of somewhere not too noisy?
