Hey guys
The window to apply for this additional insurance through nysut closes on June 15. Of course everyone in my building is clamoring for this extra coverage but does anyone actually know what it actually covers and if it's actually worth it?

When I ask my colleagues they just say "oh you need extra coverage" and nobody seems to have concrete answers

I'm not doing it. I don't really think it's necessary, and our GHI insurance is really good IMO

I kinda feel the same way

Just don't know what I'd be missing out on and the crazy thing is nobody seems to be able to tell me anything concise

I'm not a teacher and I don't know if it is the same but my dad had catastrophic through FDNY. We also had ghi which is excellent insurance. The catastrophic wasn't that much and I believe he said it fully covers everything GHI wouldn't (as long as the claim is over $10k-hence catastrophic). This could mean cancer care, etc. My mom had a heart attack at 46 years old. She had multiple surgeries over the course of 8 years-triple bypass, stents, you name it.

GHI covered most, but not all. My mom was in and out of multiple hospitals multiple times, some stays as long as 2 weeks, some only 1 day. Catastrophic kicked in and I think my dad said the final payout catastrophic made was $22k (after GHI paid). I wish my job offered it. I would buy it in a second. It's one of those things, you'll probably hopefully never need to use it, but if you do, you'll be damn glad you had it. My point is I would def look into it.

I believe any cancer treatment you would need is covered in our GHI policy though.. that's why i wasn't sure if it was worth it

It is totally worth it. If you end up using a doctor that is out of network, the catastrophic will pay the majority of the difference in the cost. Since our out of network benefits only cover 80% of the cost that GHI deems reasonable.

My son had to have surgery and there were barely any specialists that took GHI and I wasn't willing to settle for anyone. It was over $12000 for the surgery and with the catastrophic we only paid a $350 deductible. Since it pays out so well the Dr was willing to take the GHI payout and did not bill us the coinsurance of 20%.

I would definitely take it for the little bit of money that is costs. You never know when you may need it.

I just enrolled, I think it's totally worth it. I've seen people need it over the last 17 years, I'm glad they brought it back,

I ended up enrolling too. I decided that I might as well have my name in. If I get an invoice in December and feel that it is too much money, then i won't go ahead with it

Did you all just mail it in or send it certified to make sure it was received? I have to send it out this weekend.

Re: Catastrophic coverage NYC doe

DH accidentally sent it regular mail. I'm going to follow up Monday. I think the postmark deadline is June 15th.

So I spoke to a bunch of coworkers today and they all sent it regular mail and weren't worried. I decided to send it regular mail too but dropped it in the box at the post office so I know it goes out. A coworker sent hers about a month ago and she said she just got a letter saying they received her application.

Can you deduct it from your paychecks or you have to pay the lump sum?

Re: Catastrophic coverage NYC doe

You can do either. When they send you a bill you can choose.

We have it through the fire department and it's well worth it. We haven't had to use it yet but, I know we will some day.

GHI isn't as great as it used to be and I find it covers very little of certain things.

I enrolled and feel relieved reading this, thanks
