Cat Owners: Do any of you have experience with Cat Acne ??

Bonnie & Clyde have developed dirty chins. both have white fur under their mouth and lately its been dingy. So we took a look and its filthy.

If you ever owned a dog .. it reminds me of flea poop.

Both are indoor only, both are flea clean.

Jim cleaned off one cat's chin the other I worked on today.

I looked it up and it seems its Cat Acne.

Have any of you had experience with this and what helps with it?

OTHER than a vet (last recourse cause im poor)

I've read that cleaning their chins often helps. Also, make sure you use stianless steel bowls for food/water and not plastic because the plastic ones can bread dirt and bacteria.

I just looked up this:

Chloe got that on her chin, right below her lip. I took her to the vet because i had no idea what it was. They told me it was cat acne and $200 later I was sent home with no meds or course of action. It cleared up on it's own about a week and a half to two weeks later.

They've had it for more than a week.

From the link above, I'm trying to keep it clean with HydroProx rinsing daily now

I am going off on a tangent, but is the black stuff from drool? Is the cat drooling at all?

My cat with a white chin had cat acne, it actually looked like pimples. The doctor gave us some of that surgical cleaner stuff and I washed her chin every day for a few weeks. I kept her bowl really clean also, so new bowl everyday.

One of my kitties had something similar on his nose. We cleaned it with mouthwash on a q-tip because the active ingredient in the mouthwash kills the bacteria that causes the skin infection.

(I actually use Listerine to treat thrush in my horse's hooves and some minor skin infections on my horses, too.)

Your vet should be able to give you a topical ointment, though.

Suki had cat acne. The doctor told us we could use plain old rubbing alcohol on a cotten ball once a day.

YES, keep them away from plastic, plastic bags, dishes, toys etc.

Both my cat and my mom's 2 cats have allergies to plastic, they get the black kitty acne on their chins. Since we changed to a metal bowl and dont let them near plastic bags, all is well!!
