Career Suicide?

If you knew that upper management was pushing some sort of initiative that would basically phase out your job and hand over the reigns of the work you do to a newly created dept of people paid far less to do what you do - would you try and do something about it? This new dept would basically dismantle projects and programs you've created and worked hard on over the years and enforce theirs instead.

Say there were people willing to join you in opposing it...would you get together and make waves?

Or would you accept your fate, let the steamroller pass over you and maybe try and instead join the new crew? More or less follow the mentality of "if you can't beat 'em join 'em" and fall in line?

Re: Career Suicide?

You work for the state, right? Can they get rid of you (I am in the state and nearly at permanent appt., and when I am they can't get rid of me)? Do you have the ear of someone above your boss who might listen to your reasoning? In my organization, when a decision has been made it is final, so I don't think any amount of trying would get them to change their mind...

Re: Career Suicide?

I might prepare to present the benefits of the projects you've worked on. But if they are set in their ways, and the writing is on the wall, I might consider putting that energy into a new job search. Chat Icon

I think it would depend on what I thought about the new technology & if I was interested in learning about it.

If I really felt they were making the wrong move (my job aside), I would say something.

Yes...I'm already vested so it's not an issue of them actually phasing out my job or getting rid of me and I wouldn't leave over this.

I'm afraid that this decision is strongly politically backed so opposing it may be a futile effort at the very least but yes, the technology is...to put it most accurately, retarded.

But I think it may be worth a shot to try. It may at least change the way they proceed for the better. Or is it better to pretend to be all for it, and just join them and get on their good side because they are probably going to take over anyway?

See, I had a similar situation (also work with technology). I had spent 5 years working, upgrading, and developing customizations for a particular computer system. Then they decided they might rather invest in ANOTHER system entirely, which would have done away with all of my hard work. I started applying for other jobs within the organization and accepted another position. My thinking is that if you argue you might be seen as someone who is reluctant to change, and you don't want that. I know what you are saying, but they may think that you just don't want to go with the changes. I would go with it and act as supportive as possible. And half the times when I have done that they haven't been able to succeed with their plans anyway.

ETA: In my case they haven't switched systems and now need my help in my old area because no one knows how to do what I did.

I agree with not wanting to seem relunctant to change if you protest. I guess rather than voice negative opinions, I'd want to know more about the reasons behind it.

If I thought it was a bad idea after all of that, than I would want to say that I don't agree with it, but will wholeheartedly support whatever decision is made. WHen it fails, hopefully they'll remember who had the smarts to say bad idea.

I agree with this. I have a gov't job too. Whatever the bigwigs want usually gets pushed through, but I would feel like I would want to at least voice an opinion about it. Unfortunately, often times the people holding the reins don't have much experience with what your job entails, and sometimes there are reasons for change that are not shared with the department.
