I went to the wine shop this weekend and got a Malbec as a gift for $25. It got a good rating on Wine Spectator or whatever it is- they had the little blurb and rating right on the shelf.
If you go to a nice liquor store or wine shop, they usually have things like that right on the shelf or you can ask someone who works there.
That is what I do when looking for gifts.

Greg Norman, the golfer, is a wine enthusiast. He invested a lot of his own money into creating a line of wines that are very quality and actually pretty reasonably priced.
I love his Cabernet Sauvignon and I have given it as a gift many times and people always rave about the taste. Anyone who loves red wine would love his selection of reds... He has Merlot, a couple of mixes, etc. as well. ALL of them are fantastic.
I highly recommend his wines.

2012 Franciscan Estate Cabernet - Napa Valley
It's about $30 a bottle and delish.
They have a great blend of cab sav, merlot, and malbec too but it's a bit more pricey - $50.

Malbec used to be my favorite, but now it's def Montelpuciano. The best.
If you can find it there is an Italian blend wine, called I. Amazing and not expensive.
