Can someone please explain to me why a 16 year old girl NEEDS a Blackberry??

My niece, who is 16, has a blackberry storm. She spent all day texting from it on Thanksgiving.

I guess to some extent I "get" all the texting - though I don't agree with it as I think the phones should be away during dinner, but the need to have a Blackberry? This eludes me completely. What on earth does she need a Blackberry for??

Is it that I'm not a parent so I don't understand?

Well, my DD is only 3, but I'm reasonably sure that if she were 16 she would NOT own a Blackberry. But I'm 100% sure she would NOT be texting throughout Thanksgiving.

Wow- you are SOO out of it! How else would she communicate? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I don't get it either and I work at a high school. I hate all the texting, computer time they spend, etc. We are breeding a generation of people who have no idea how to communicate face to face.
As for the texting the whole holiday- that blackberry would have been put right back in the car if she was my DD. Chat Icon Chat Icon

That means her parents are paying the extra $30 a month (or so) for her to be able to use it. I didn't get a blackberry for that reason.

Wow. just wow.

the ONLY way my 16 year old would have a bberry, is if she bought it HERSELF and pays the monthly bill for it. otherwise, she gets the free phone that comes with the plan Chat Icon

Re: Can someone please explain to me why a 16 year old girl NEEDS a Blackberry??

As long as the parents have a "texting plan".

I remember the Holidays. I was BORED TO DEATH when my family would come over. It would drag for hours. We would end up 2+ hours at the table . My parents hosted all the Holidays. I would hide in my room until the next course would be served.

I think i's different for adults and teenagers to enjoy such Holidays.

Honestly? For the same reason I had to have each and every imported Duran Duran 12 inch single. The reason? I was a teenager.

I don't have an issue with a 16 yo with a BlackBerry, but she can spend an hour with the family WITHOUT the CrackBerry. She can spend the rest of the evening catching up on all the "important" things she missed during the hour, but dinner is for eating, not texting....

I have teenagers. They have nice phones but no blackberry's. We don't allow texting at dinner. All the other times is fine.

i agree with this. honestly, when my DS is 16, if i can afford to get him a blackberry i probably will - i think it's a nice thing to do, and it's not like i would get him one at age 10. but i do not think it's appropriate for it to be used at the dinner table - whether it's thanksgiving or not.

Re: Can someone please explain to me why a 16 year old girl NEEDS a Blackberry??

My brothers, their wives, and my aunt were all texting during our Thanksgiving dinner this year...as they do through most of our family dinners.

I find it rude, but sometimes, it's nice when certain relatives are too busy texting to talk to anyone......Chat Icon

I totally agree!

I know my 12 year old niece wants one. I said if you're only going to text, what is the point?

Re: Can someone please explain to me why a 16 year old girl NEEDS a Blackberry??

I am with you...I am twice her age+ and I don't even have one. However, at some point I did have a "beeper", probably around age 18...as if I was a dr or surgeon. Chat Icon I guess it's just goes with the times. But I agree, I think there should be limits if kids DO have these things, such as not during dinner, during conversations, etc. My DH has one and it bugs me to no end when he uses it while we are talking, hanging out, etc.

Re: Can someone please explain to me why a 16 year old girl NEEDS a Blackberry??

I am definately one of those never say never people. However...I can tell you right now that my children will NEVER have a blackberry at 16 years old. I don't even want them to have a cell phone and DH things I'm being ridiculous because a lot will change in the years to come.

I wasn't allowed to have a beeper until I was 18. I wanted one so badly. My mom said they were for 'hookers and drug dealers' and I wasn't either, so I didn't need one.Chat Icon I finally bought one when I was 18 with my own money and the next year they were pretty much obsolete. Chat Icon

If I couldn't have it neither can my kids Chat Icon Chat Icon

Ya know...I might have said EXACTLY the same things as you stated bc I am pretty old school. No need for all these things the kids are young BUT then ya have to remember its not like when we were kids. There are barely any payphones around in case of emergencies. I am starting to think the cell phones are actually pretty logical. Also, it seems alot more dangerous out there then just playing in thestreets with the neighbors kids. I actually think Gilly might get a cell before she is even 12...just for safety measures.
