So what do you feed your kids?! DS is still getting some baby food and I would like to start getting him off that. What do you feed them while on the go...this is my big dilemma, I still bring stage 3 food b/c it's so easy! TIA

Great question, I dont know. But do you give teething biscuits or cookies? I"m worried there might be milk products in there.

I give him the blue box of Arrowroot cookie, they are the only ones I can find with no milk products, he loves them! I also give cheerios, puffs, applewagon wheels.

Re: Calling dairy free moms..

I have dairy free teething biscuits, but the name is escaping me now. I usually bring a cup of all natural applesauce with me, Van's makes dairy free waffles that I'll take along. I make my own pancakes for her using rice milk. I also bring organic toasted O's (like cheerios). There's dairy-free teddy puffs, too. I honestly am forgetting the brand name of them, but I will check when I get home this afternoon. Oh, I also make her mini blueberry muffins. You can find dairy free mixes, or use rice milk to make them instead. I buy from the organic section in Stop and Shop. There are a lot of Vegan products that have no milk in them. However, many do have soy. Luckily, Ava is not allergic to soy anymore. HTH!

I already told DH that I'm hitting stop and shop tonight to look for new things. DS has been having soy for 3-4 weeks now and seems fine, what a relief! What do you do with the waffle, make it at home and just take it with you?

Re: Calling dairy free moms..

Healthy Times makes cookies and teething biscuits that are dairy free. I get them in stop and shop but they're not in the baby section, they're with the organic stuff. Whole Foods also has a lot of options. I buy waffles there. I also got some cake mixes there for his birthday. Cherrybrook Kitchens has a bunch of stuff there that is dairy, soy, and nut free.

For homemade pancakes and waffles I use one of the "complete" mixes that you just have to add water. Check the labels, some are dairy free. I've gotten the shop rite brand and the walmart brand, both dairy free. Today I made him french toast and just mixed a little soy milk in with the egg. Good idea about the muffins Rachel! I'm going to try that!

I'm struggling with things to bring when we're out too. On the go some of the things I've been bringing are fruit, cheerios, boars head chicken or turkey, bread. My best find lately is a bag of frozen mixed vegetables. The kind with the corn, peas, lima beans, green beans. They're the perfect size for picking up and he gobbles them up! He also likes pasta. Ditalini is perfect for a finger food.

Some of the gerber graduate meals are dairy free. I think the chicken stew, turkey stew, and the chicken noodle soup are dairy free.

Some other ideas are grilled cheese made with soy cheese, any kind of meat, veggies, or fruit. This week I tried to make him mac & cheese with soy cheese and milk, but he didn't care for it. I'll have to try it again.

I would love to be able to go out to a restaurant and order him something off of the menu, but I'm always afraid of what could be in there. After reading labels for the past year I know that even things you would never think have dairy in them do.

Keep posting ideas everyone! Feeding a kid with food allergies is hard!

Try shopping at Wild by Nature too. They carry alot of dairy/soy/gluten/nut free products.

DD has severe dairy/egg/wheat/nut allergies... I make almost everything for her.
Boars Head makes a dairy/gluten/wheat free hot dog that you can find at Stop and Shop - They are excellent and easy. Also - Wild By Nature carries chicken nuggets that are gluten/wheat/dairy free.
Stop and Shop also carries a Toffuti cheese - it's vegan and pretty good. Be careful with the Vans products (waffles and stuff) - They are manufactured in a plant that also processes dairy/nut/egg products.

DD eats a lot of fruits and veggies - and a lot of stuff that I just prepare myself.

When ordering cold cuts just be sure that your deli uses seperate machines for the meat and cheese.

HTH

Don't worry, you can find things that are soy and dairy free.
As someone mentioned, it's Healthy Times that makes the dairy free teething biscuits.
As for Ava's soy allergy, I just tried it one day and she never had a reaction. I wouldn't go and put her on soy formula, as I think too much soy is unhealthy, but she eats things that have soy.
As for the waffles, I defrost them (they're the frozen kind), then stick them in a ziplock. Or if we're going out for a while, i'll leave it frozen to thaw.

This is just my opinion and the opinion of MY doctor, but my dr. always tells me that too much soy in your diet is not good because of plant estrogens and other things in soy that can have an effect on your thyroid and other things. Personally, I don't think that it is a good option for us. But that's just how we feel. If your dr. said it's fine, then I'm sure it is. I'm just overly cautious when it comes to foods. I worry about all sorts of things from pesticides to high fructose corn syrup to soy lechiten, etc. It's just my own hang up, I guess. I didn't mean to make anyone worry!

I agree that there's few options, but I am still unsure about what we'll do when she turns a year. For now, we'll keep her on Neocate and see what happens in a few months.

Some things Kevin eats

Cinnamon graham crackers / sticks
Enjoy Life Cookies (Top 8 free) at WF
Teddy Grahams
Wheatables crackers
Cheerios
Thomas's Bagels
Hillshire Farm ham and turkey
Tyson Chicken Nuggets
Hebrew National Hot Dogs
Doles fruit cups
Motts Applesauce
Pasta and veggies
Teriyaki Meatloaf for "What's to Eat" cookbook

He's gotten very picky and sometimes will still only eat baby oatmeal.

I'm trying to get him to eat more stuff but its been a real battle.

it is hard because you're right, we don't have many other options.

There's rice milk, but that can lead to constipation issues and there's also a worry about xcontam issues with certain brands. There's also a potato-based drink called Dari-Free found in health food stores but my dd wouldn't touch the stuffChat Icon

So we give her soymilk. She does really well on it. I think people often worry because it's not the "norm" and relatively a new thing, but what about cow's milk and all the antibotics the animals are given? Doesn't that pass through to the milk? Ya know? Cow's milk can have it's own issues too. JMO.

Re: Calling dairy free moms..

I have a question, have any of you thought about goat's milk? I've heard that it's much closer in composition to breast milk than cow's milk and that the protein's are much easier to breakdown than cow's milk? I also know they are very similar and babies could possibly be allergic to both. Just curious. And where in the world would you get goat's milk?

From what my son's allergist said, many children who have the cow's milk protein allergy will also react to goat's milk.

I picked up a container of oat milk at Whole Foods but haven't tried it yet. I may use it for baked goods just as a change from the soy but will have to do a little experimentation with it.

I've never heard of oat milk! I wonder how it tastes? Did WFs have any other types of milk like that?

Please come back and tell us how it was - I may have to try it for a bit of variation!

Re: Calling dairy free moms..

I just read about Oat's Milk the other day, that it works well in recipes. I also heard that almond milk is the next best thing in nutrients to cow's milk for a baby that has a milk protein allergy. Um, can't imagine giving that to a babyChat Icon

WFs had a lot of different milks. The only other one that stands out in my mind was Almond milk. I didn't buy that one because we haven't tried any nuts with Kevin yet.

As soon as i try it, I'll let you know how it worked.

Not worried but curious b/c I am not really familiar with soy milk but after being on Neocate for 15 months it was time to move on.
