Buying a Used car from a dealer

What do you expect them to drop off the listed price?

i.e if the dealer has listed the price as $30,000 do you think a final price of $29,500 is really as low as they can go? That this is what the car owes them etc and they had dropped the price already?

I thought there would be more negotiating to be done.

we just went through this, too. My car got totaled by somebody who ran a red light.
i looked at a brand new 2011 car and liked it. THEN at another dealer, they had basically the same car- but a 2009. it had all the same features, same colors, everything. so we were excited to save some money since i hadn't planned on having to buy a car.
WELL when it came time to negotiate, the guys really wouldn't budge!! it ended up that the brand new car was "only" like $3000 more than the used one. a lot of money, but at the same time almost worth it because it was brand new.
ALSO- the used car we could get 2.9% financing, but on brand new cars, they were offering 0% financing for 3 years! so that saved money, too...
its crazy how it all worked!

Dealers def have more room to move on new cars but I would think they have more than $500 on any car.

We bought a used car last year and talked the guy down $1000-$1500. We tried really hard to make him budge more, but he wouldn't. He kept saying how the car was a sport model and those are hard to come by used....
