Budgets for 2013-2014 School Year

I was just wondering how everyone's budgets are looking for next year. I know my school is already looking to pinch pennies next year because of a reduction in state aid and the "2%" tax cap.

I am (somewhat) confident that I will not be excessed again this year since we barely have enough teachers in my content area to offer the necessary graduation requirements. Looking forward 2-3 years though, I can see that might change....

Half Hollow Hills needs to slash 9 million, Smithtown needs to slash 4.5 million. This is just the beginning. All districts are losing funding and will need to generate more revenue by piercing the cap or eliminating programs. Personally I'd rather pay more taxes than have cuts.

We will probably lose a handful of teachers b/c of student enrollment.

they proposed to the community for discussion:

class size
after school buses
sports
clubs
Spanish in elem schools
full-half day Kindergarten
instrumental music

My district is looking into cutting $3 million. Superintendents first proposal is cutting about 9 teaching positions.

My district has to cut a LOT. So far they have suggested:

transportation
going to half day K
sports
music
enrichment

If we go to half day K, that is easily 20 teachers. Right now, it's not looking like it was a good idea to stay out on maternity leave all year since I am sliding down the seniority list Chat Icon

Did anyone see Plainview-OB's contract?

Pay freeze for 4 years (they are into their 2nd year of the contract now), no step in year 3.

the superintendent also took a freeze. The article in Newsday stated it was due to Cuomo's cutting state aid to high tax areas...how does that make sense? We pay more in taxes, so we need even less from the state?

I'm so sick of upstate NY. And NO ONE wants to do anything. State Senators and Assembymen are useless!

What's scary is that POB is known to have a tough union. Our contract is up this year and I'm not expecting much.
I would rather have a 0% with a step, then some bs percentage and no step.
