brown & white rice??? (also part happy bellies ??)

is there a difference???

we had emma on the happy bellies brown rice....she broke out in a HUGE rash (it's STILL there) and it's been a week now. (doc said it's normal to take that long with a food allergy and no meds).

what if we tried WHITE rice? (going to call the doc on monday - but wanted to ask the BTDT gals)

is there any difference in the 'rices'??

could it just be the probiotics in the Happy Bellies brand too???

Ditto - James broke out in a horrible rash when we had him on the Enfamil AR (it had added rice starch in it) and our doc told us to just do the oatmeal and barley.

Re: brown & white rice??? (also part happy bellies ??)

Hey jess, I'm just curious, did they officially diagnose her with the rice allergy (via a blood test or anything?) Maybe you posted, I'm sorry if this is a repeat of a previously asked/answered ?
From what I've read a rice allergy is fairly uncommon (at least here, but in Asia where rice is a dietary staple it can be as high as 10%!).
So is it possible she doesn't really have a true rice allergy but is reacting to the probiotics or perhaps something else in the Happy Bellies food??
If it *is* a rice allergy, there's also a possibility of an allergic reaction to other grains, including oats and barley, so just be aware of that too!
I agree with PP I'd probably stay away from anything rice-based until you had 100% confirmation on the allergy, if you don't already have that at this point!

right now - we don't have a 100% diagnosis. i want to get her to an allergist honestly. the ONLY new thing that Em was introduced to was rice cereal and after a week of 1 bowl a day, she developed this horrible rash (hundreds of bumps covering her entire body).

Wednesday and Thursday (of last week) - she had FULL bowls of rice cereal (1 teaspoon rice and 4 teaspoons formula). Friday - the rash was all over her chest. Take her to the doc - she says possible heat rash - but let's stop the rice anyway - just to be safe. She said it's not 'showing' like ecxema...etc.

Sunday - it's all over her back, chest, arms, legs & is making it's way up her face & is now red. Picking her up makes us think of handling sandpaper... we give her a colloidal oatmeal bath to hopefully soothe her skin...she seems more comfortable.

Monday AM - call the doc - we go in at 11. She takes ONE look at Em and says - it's the rice. She then washes her hands & spends awhile with us - showing us how it's spreading is exactly like 'hives' on an adult with an allergy to something. She says we can give her meds - but she's NOT inconsolable - she cries, we pick her up - she's fine. She doesn't want to 'medicate her just to medicate her'. We're going to wait to give her oatmeal until we are back from our New Years' trip to Niagara.

The doc also told us that it can take up to 2 weeks for the rash to completely go away because it's already working its' way out of her system.....

sorry this reply is so long!

Re: brown & white rice??? (also part happy bellies ??)

Ugh wow, poor little Emma!Chat Icon This sounds brutal and I have the super-sensitive-prone-to-rashes-from-everything skin too!!! OK sounds like your ped is all over it, so thats great!

One other thing to ask, I frequently see "brown rice syrup" listed as an ingredient in foods, I think it's a sweetener, not really sure but I know some formulas use that too. Check your food and formula labels, you might ask the ped if she could be allergic to that as well.

Glad she's feeling better now though!!!!

interesting! i will do that! thank you!!!!

she seems much happier now - the only thing now is that we have to keep her COOLER than usual (she's a sweaty baby anyway) - because the doc said if she gets hot, she'll get heat rash on TOP Of the allergy rash... she's SO my kid!

Yea stay away from the rice for now. I've been doing oatmeal with Tommy since he had diarrhea for 7 days from what I believe was the rice!
