Boy struck, killed by LIRR train

Poor boy Chat Icon Chat Icon

I heard this on the train but hoping it was just a rumor because of the horrible commute.

Boy struck, killed by LIRR train
Trains running between Penn Station and Jamaica have been suspended after a pedestrian accident.
BY JULIET CHUNG
Newsday Staff Writer

January 5, 2007, 7:56 PM EST

A 12-year-old boy was was struck and killed earlier this evening when an eastbound Long Island Railroad train struck him on the tracks, officials said.

The boy, whose identity police did not release, was struck around 5:40 p.m., police said. Det. Kevin Czartoryski said it was unclear what the boy, who was with a friend, was doing there.

Police were investigating on 63rd Drive near Austin Street, in Queens, near 8 p.m. Friday night. The boy's family was on the scene, Czartoryski said.

The incident occurred between the Forest Hills and Woodside stations, according to LIRR spokeswoman Susan McGowan, and involved the 5:17 p.m. train from Penn Station, scheduled to arrive in Huntington at 6:21 p.m.

Service was temporarily suspended between the Penn and Jamaica stations, but as of 7:15 p.m., service had been restored to one of the four tracks connecting them, McGowan said.

New York City Transit was honoring LIRR tickets.

that is so sad!!

My DH was stuck on the train for about an hour in that area. Of course he had no idea what was going on, except there was some sort of police activity

I had to work a little late so I ended up trying to catch a train out of Flatbush, not even knowing all of the problems at Penn. Of course I had to connect at Jamaica with the train from Penn anyway. The train was late getting to Flatbush and then we slowly approached Jamaica and it was HAVOC. The trains there were 5:07 and 5:10 and by this time it was 6:50. Anyway my train showed up at 7:35 and I got home around 8:15. The guy sitting next to me got a call from his daughter telling him what happened but I thought maybe it was just a rumor. How awful.

Re: Boy struck, killed by LIRR train

DH ended up taking the train to Port Washington and I picked him up there.

I feel bad for the family of the child that was hit. However (and I'm sure I'll get flamed for this), if he wasn't out doing bad things, nothing bad would have happened to him. No one deserves this, but the parents share some guilt in this.

Re: Boy struck, killed by LIRR train

DH works for LIRR. It's definitely true, but we don't have any other details yet. There was also a fire at Farmingdale, causing other delays, if anyone was looking for info on that.

I used to teach at the school right by that train station in Rego Park. I saw 2 of my old students on the news last night. I was hysterical. Those poor children, losing one of their friends like that. Chat Icon
I did not know the boy that passed away. He did not attend the school where I taught. But my heart truly breaks. Those poor parents. Chat Icon Chat Icon

No flaming from me. The news last nite said they snuck into an unauthorized area in order to vandalize. I don't feel bad at all.

Re: Boy struck, killed by LIRR train

My dad was on that train. He said he was in the second car and that he felt it happen, and then the train came to a screeching halt. He didn't get home until 10:30..
