Boy Scouts to allow gay youths to join

(CNN) -- Openly gay youths will be allowed to join scouting, a historic decision the Boy Scouts of America says will keep it unclouded by "a single, divisive, and unresolved societal issue."
More than 60% of the group's 1,400-member national council voted Thursday at an annual meeting in Grapevine, Texas, for the change, which takes effect Jan. 1.
"No youth may be denied membership in the Boy Scouts of America on the basis of sexual orientation or preference alone," says the resolution.
The BSA, however, will maintain its ban on gay adult leaders.
"The resolution also reinforces that Scouting is a youth program, and any sexual conduct, whether heterosexual or homosexual, by youth of Scouting age is contrary to the virtues of Scouting," the 103-year-old organization said in a statement after the vote.
...
Not perfect, but a major step in the right direction... I'll be happier when they allow gay adult leaders, but at least they aren't punishing the boys for being who they are....

I'm not happy.
I'm not happy because it's not enough. I get that it's better than the alternative but is it really?
From Buzzfeed because I thought they summed it up best:
If you want to learn how to measure the vast distance between “tolerance” and “acceptance,” join the Boy Scouts. Today, 61% of 1,400 voting members of the BSA’s National Council voted to “remove the restriction denying membership to youth on the basis of sexual orientation alone.” Before you start writing “thank you” letters though, read on. The official statement, released this afternoon continues, “A change to the current membership policy for adult leaders was not under consideration; thus, the policy for adults remains in place.”
Homophobia is most dangerous when it has a good editor. What makes the BSA’s statement so galling is how it deftly attempts to sidestep the blatant hatred and disdain of gay people packed in between the lines. Instead of sending a clear message that all boys, gay, straight and in-between, should to be embraced as well as introduced to the kinds of role models BSA is in the business of fashioning, the organization’s National Council chose has chosen instead to further the idea that gay adults are pariahs and pedophiles.
And so, Boy Scouts can come out as long as they have no desire, at the age of eighteen, to become role models themselves. That’s just about as logical as Canada’s recent decision to end its anti-gay blood donation ban: gay men can donate blood there now, as long as they haven’t had sex with another man in the last five years. In both cases, the subtext is that gay people, ultimately, are dirty – innately and unforgivably. We will be tolerated but not, at least for now, truly welcome.

The bigger part that insults and offends me, more than anything else, is the not allowing gay scout leaders...
I feel like they are insinuating that just because an adult male is gay, he can't work with young males. That is disgusting. Being a homosexual and being a pedophile are TWO TOTALLY SEPARATE things. One is who you are, you are born that way, and there's nothing wrong with it. The other is a sickness and a disease. And I'm so sick of people almost marrying them and grouping them together. I have loved ones who are gay - they have NO interest in little boys, and to basically quarantine them from being around young males because of that assumption is disgusting.
