block island?
I have never been, is shelter island better? are there nice places to stay?

I love Block Island!
There are lots of decent places to stay, nothing is fancy or 5-star, it's a very casual summer beach community.
My favorite place to stay is Manissess Hotel. I have stayed at the Harborside and the National Hotels in the past. For a more romantic/expensive stay...try the Blue Dory Inn.
Everything is close to the beach.
You leave your car in Montauk, bring or rent a bike, have have a great time!

I prefer block island to shelter island - you can rent mopeds and go all around the island. I think we stayed at a place called the atlantic but cannot remember exactly. I love it - cute little shops and nice restaurants.

Block Island was great...
We stayed at the Rose Farm Inn and rented bicycles for a few days and a moped for one day.
there are a lot of small beaches and great restaurants to eat at.
It's really pretty.
