Well I don't know if we shopped around too much, but we paid $15K for our kitchen cabinets (Kraftsmaid) from Home Depot. The quality is great and we have a fairly large kitchen.

Kraftmaid makes different product lines with varying price points - so, your friend could say they got their Kraftmaid cabs at HD for a great price, but if you pick something more $$$, then you won't have the same experience.

We bought ours from Consumers and it worked out well. I think we got a decent price.

we got ours at consumers but I hated dealing with them
The cabinets are great though. I love them, we have the ones that you cant slam the drawers and I love them.
