Re: [bangs head into the wall]

These are the people voting to determine who the president will be.

That's the most horrifying thing about it.

So what should be all have to take IQ tests? I'm sorry but that is the joy of living in America. Is it embarassing...yes, but come on reading what you write unless you're educated and have tons of political knowledge you shouldn't be aloud to vote. Soory it i'm going off I just get so frustrated around elections and how people can make others feels inferior. I'm not saying you are it just irks me how you respond to some of this stuff. I know The other thread was pulled, but I don't know why. I did not check the thread and when I went to it was pulled. Maybe I should just fm you

I have no idea why my other thread was pulled. LIF used to inform me, but they didn't.

Obviously we can't disenfranchise stupid and uneducated people by forcing them to take a test, but doesn't it make you sick that people are so uneducated to begin with? We're at war right now, and the fact that we got into the war on false pretenses aside, I think it probably IS true that a good portion of Americans can't tell you who we're at war with, who is on our side, who is not on oujr side, what the prevailing issues are in the middle east. That's clear from the fact that some would say Israel is a Muslim country. There are plenty of people who know NOTHING but still say hateful things like "we need to make a crater out of the Middle East." How can you even say that? Millions of innocent, caring loving people live there. These people don't know sh*t about the region. I'm surprised if they know what's going on beyond their small towns.

And about elections specifically, don't you think it's sad that people don't take their "civic duty" seriously enough to become educated about the facts? Thousands of people sacrifice it ALL for our country, and these people won't even read a newspaper to better serve their country in the voting booth once every 2-4 years.

This is why I hate swift-boating and these stupid fear-based campaigns now cropping up against Obama. People are ignorant enough to believe that he's a "radical Muslim" Manchurian Candidate, or that he's a communist. With the events that have happenned within the lifetimes of most voters (Cuban Missile Crisis, Cold War, 9/11, among others) this is something that really scares people who are ignorant enough to believe it.
I am an outspoken Obama supporter, but if you don't want to vote for him, do it because you are a small gov't fiscal conservative, do it because you think his experience doesn't make him right for the job, but don't do it because of some ridiculous fear tactic and sheer ignorance.

I 100% understand what you're saying and I agree we have a long way to go in education. I look at it as a funny, but sad reality. To be honest If everybody voted things would be SO different. With a right comes responsibility. I do not like Obama and why is my own reason. I will listen to what he says and I will weigh all of the facts before I go vote in August at the electionChat Icon It's SO sad we have people who know nothing and choose not to vote and then we have others who read, and do education but can not vote. I think I find you frustrating because you remind me SO much of my friend Rachel. She has been following this election since the 1st day and has been following the war since the beginning along with every thing else. She is open minded, smart, educated, and from London. She is not a US citizen. It makes me embarrassed that she knows more then I do. The point is how do you get people to care? Some people can barely make it through the day let alone read. We have many things we need to change here.........

Re: [bangs head into the wall]

I don't necessarily think our education system, is at fault, nor are people who have difficulties reading. I think it's part of a culture of ignorance. You can take 22 civics classes in HS and then leave HS and have no clue, or know something and then choose not to learn more. I don't blame the system, I blame people who are lazy and choose to be ignorant.

I also think that if people voted on a profile, including issues, past senate votes if applicable, etc with no names and personalities attached, a surprisingly large number of people would be voting for someone else.

I've been an Obama suppoter since the 2004 DNC. I heard him speak at the convention and said "that man is going to be President of the United States someday" so I learned about him. And I don't know if anyone remembers, but over a year ago my avatar said "Run, Barack, Run!" When most people had no idea who Barack Obama was.

I'm not saying people need to be like me and read the newspaper every single day and fall asleep with CNN on. But I think following the basics is important. Look at 2003. I mean it really took a lot of ignorance to believe the hype and not listen to the facts that there was no real evidence of WMD, we were going against the UN, etc etc. and a majority of Americans believed the headlines and the pundits, but didn't look at the articles on page 4 or read between the lines. And now people are DYING because our elected officials were equally ignorant and/or self serving.
