Baby Food

Good morning everyone! Here's the beginning of my first of many questions : ).

Sophia was never on solid foods in China and was exclusively on formula. We have introduced her to cereal since we came home and she enjoys that. Yesterday we went to our adoption doctor and he wants her started on solids immediately as she's underweight. (she's a tiny thing at only 14lbs). Then he said that he wants her to have as much protein and fats and possible. Of course in the middle of getting her blood work done and shots I didn't ask him to elaborate so I'm stuck...

I gave her gerber stage one organic sweet potatoes last night, which she loved but I have no idea about the protiens and fats. None of the stage ones seem to have any.

So finally my question....Do babies mostly get the protiens and fats from meats and dairy? If yes, I assume I'm still a few weeks away from that and should just keep giving her the stage ones?

Thanks and sorry for the rambling!

Re: Baby Food

If she is doing well on Stage 1 and cereal I would start on Stage 2....this stage has meats in it. Try it and see how she does. At that age most children have tried yogurt so she may do well on that.

I guess my advice would be to take it slow and don't give her too many new things at once. Have funChat Icon

She would be getting protein & fats from meats, yogurt, cheese, and beans/tofu. Since she is 9 months I would start her on yogurt right away. Also beechnut makes stage one meats.

Re: Baby Food

My son is the same age. But since she is a late starter I would start with the cereal (rice, barley, oatmeal), try all the veggies & fruit and introduce Yogurt since your Dr. wants to add more fat to her diet. Once you see she has no reactions to any of those I would try jarred meats and so on.

My son LOVES yogurt, Earth's Best organic mixed peas and brown rice and the Lentils and brown rice.

Does Sohia have teeth? Maybe you can try Gerber puffs or teething biscuits. My son love the biscuits.

I only knows what works for my son so you should always listen to your Dr!!

Re: Baby Food

Avocado might be a good thing - mash it with some banana - and it'll give her a ton of nutrients and "good" fat.

Re: Baby Food

You could also try hard boiling an egg and giving her the yolk (no whites). Just mix it with a little milk to moisten it up a little bit.

Re: Baby Food

These ladies have all given great suggestions. I think the best suggestion is to try to not introduce too many new foods at once though, because then if she has an adverse reaction, you won't know what it's from. She's getting all the nutrients she needs right now from formula. Once she's off the formula, that's when you have to watch what she's eating more. My pediatrician said that eating solids before a year of age is just to expand their palate, to get them used to tasting new foods...it's once they're not getting all their vitamins from formula that you have to watch their fat intake. If she's not accustomed to eating foods with courser textures, I'd take it easy in the beginning to make sure she doesn't choke. Try a new food every three days or so. Once you've tried every flavor of Stage 1 and she seems ok with them, move on to Stage 2 and try cheerios/puffs. It's all very overwhelming when you don't have them from infancy...trust me, I've been there .. and recently! Are you seeing Dr. Lee?
