For a legal secretary - yes that's pretty good! But there's no schooling necessary here either. After 5 years experience I was only making 30-something (although I definitely think I was underpaid!).

I agree - however if this job was on LI I would NOT hesitate, this job would be perfect for me. This would be a pretty nice pay cut for me if I stayed in the city Chat Icon

Re: <><><>Attention Legal Secy FOr NYC

I think $50k is a little on the low end but it depends on the size of the firm. I know someone interviewed at my firm about 6 months ago and they offered $59k and she only havd about 4-5 yrs experience. On the other side, one of the girls in my office makes $72k!!

But yeah I agree, if it was $50k on LI that job would be gone in a heartbeat!!

Seriously - it IS a lotttt of $$$$

The only way - I think - to make more money is to switch firms every few years so you keep increasing your salary to the going rate. If you stay at one place too long and the raises kind of stink you'll end up being under paid. Also larger firms pay more - because they can afford to. Plus the # of years experience you have make a difference too.

You're right about switching to get pay increases. I have changed firms a lot - I've never been at a single firm for more than 3 years! My salary has more than doubled since I started in this field 10 years ago, but I prefer small firms so I guess that's why the numbers are lower. I have no desire to change jobs at the moment but when I do I'll DEFINITELY be looking into larger firms! Chat Icon

Kathy, this is so very true... I have been a legal secretary in Manhattan for about 15 years now (Chat Icon) and the reason I make a very good salary is due to the fact I've changed firms 4 times in the course of my career. The first 2x were entirely money moves, to bigger firms - the next 2x I actually jumped firms WITH my boss and our department (he is the senior partner and chairman of our practice group) and with that jump, came more $$. I presently work at a HUGE firm, much bigger than my liking and I am NOT too thrilled with the politics here Chat Icon BUT I have total job security and a very nice position since I work for the chair of the dept Chat Icon (and he is an AWESOME boss too, so I dont think I would rock the boat and bother leaving at this point)

I also make a bit more than the average legal sec'y because I used to primarily work for intellectual property (patent, trademark, copyright) firms and back in the day, they required that you have a technical background and some knowledge of that practice group in order to be hired.

50K for 5 yrs experience in Manhattan is OK, but not phenominal -- on LI or in Westchester county, well that would be an amazing salary (I would have to take a HUGE paycut to work in the 'burbsChat Icon)

Felicia, I am in the same position. I'm not leaving, even though I could leave and make more $$$! I work for a senior guy like you do and sometimes the extra $ isnt worth it when you have security and a great boss.

I think I need to change careers. As a social worker (with a masters degree) we are lucky if we earn 50K

I was going to say many of my friends who graduated from law school last year were being offered jobs in the 35K-45k range - with no benefits (or next to no benefits) They would be Chat Icon if they saw this

The first year attorneys in my firm start at $150,000 with full benefits. the summer associates get paid the same salary.

I have my degree in Criminal Justice. I'm about 4 classes away from my degree in Forensic Pathology....I don't use either degree... I had to drop out of school when I became legal guardian to my younger sister and was never really able to go back.

Oh well...Chat Icon

This is the typical salary for the top manhattan firms - but it is not the average salary by any means - but the percentage of overall attorney's who work in those firms is actually small - this is why many people say that when people come out of law school the average starting salary is very high. Last I checked average starting salary for hofstra, touro or st johns was about 40-60 range. City to start maybe 50-70 is more average obviously the bigger the firm the better the pay - long island is 30-60K to start is about right. The smaller the firm (15 of less) 40-50 is more typical. Places like NYC law department start at 50 or 51K with a three year committment.

Re: <><><>Attention Legal Secy FOr NYC

The bigger firms in NYC (Skadden, Polk, my firm, etc.) all start at around $150k. There are publications on the Internet that show starting salary for large NYC firms. I don't really know about LI, I haven't worked there in years. I also don't know about the smaller firms, for the same reason.

I agree with Kathy. This is same salary range for attorneys at my firm. But this is true for all LARGE, NYC lawfirms... of course its is not the case for smaller firms in Manhattan and/or LI or Westchester firms..

Same with legal secretarys/paralegals and assistants... you definitely make much more in NYC than you could in LI/Westcheter (this is why I work in Manhattan)

And a good, experienced legal assistant /secretary certainly pays her dues and works hard in this environment - trust me on that one Chat Icon

Honestly, I have to say this price range of salaries for an ATTORNEY is extremely low and yes your friends SHOULD faint being offered that! A legal secretary with a bit of experience can make that much on LI or Westchester... so I'd tell your friends that they are definitely interviewing at the wrong places Chat Icon

Even for 1st year associates in Long Island or Westchester, I cannot imagine they would be offered a salary THIS low. That is, unless you are talking about working for the city (i.e., the NY Law Department, in one of the DA's offices, etc .. but the amazing experience you gain in those departemtns is almost worth the low salary, IMO)
