At what point is it vomitting and not spitting up?

I'm not quite sure what's going on with Ava today. She's pooping a lot, not extremely loose, but not her usually poop (sorry for the TMI), and she is "spitting up" a lot more than she has in the past month. But it's large quantities. At what point is it vomitting? I don't even know. She's so cranky, and I'm sure it's the teething, but now I'm afraid it's a virus.

I would say vomitting is something that they're not in control of - or have less control over - more from the throat. Vomitting is from the belly.

Unfortunately - it sounds familiar to what's happening to Maddie.Chat Icon Chat Icon

when it's curdled. sorry! half digested. or if it smells. spit up usually comes up exactly how it went in and smells like formula. if she digests it and it comes from her belly, it will smell and look curdled. hope this helps!Chat Icon

Usually vomit has more substance to it. Gross, I know. And it smells. Also when they spit up, it's usually once then it's over. Vomitting is usually two or three or four in a row.

Just be careful - wash your hands before you do ANYTHING and especially after changing her diapers and cleaning up her messes. Jake got this stomach bug on Thanksgiving, then I got it the next day and it knocked me on my azz. I spent most of friday night puking my brains out. It's definitely going around. And it will be nearly impossible for you to take care of her if you get it.

I hope this is not what she has. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

hannah has had a stomach bug since friday. she could not keep any of her bottles down. as soon as it went down it came up forcefully. we are still slowly introducing the formula back into her diet. she has been drinking pedialyte as per our ped.

Re: At what point is it vomitting and not spitting up?

Thanks everyone. I've pretty much figured out that it's just spitting up. THANK GOD!Chat Icon She ate like a champ a while ago and nothing. I think that the spitting up might have gotten worse lately because she's trying to pull herself into a sitting position from laying on her back. The straining, I think, is making her spit up a lot. We had just finally turned the corner with her reflux, and now it's bringing back memories from a not-too-forgotten timeChat Icon

We're going through this with Ella lately too. The spit up has increased, and she's always straining to sit up or rolling around.

My ped mentioned it may also be related to her teething.

Just because it's curddled doesn't mean it's vomit. I asked the Dr. about this at our last visit. He just said that they're little stomach's can't always fully digest and some milk/formula can come back up after it's started to be digested.
